Bundesliga Judo Showdown: Hertha Walheim Faces Off Against Remscheid

The church mice welcome Croesus! This is how the opening fight between Hertha Walheim and the Remscheid judo team could be titled. In the first Judo Bundesliga, the hosts from Walheim are only outsiders compared to the Remscheiders, who have bought up pretty much everything that belongs to the international class in recent years.

Saturday, 4 p.m., the Herthaners known as “Schmiede” will compete against the championship candidate of the Northwest relay. “For me, Remscheid is the absolute top candidate in the league,” says Lars Entgens. He is a trainer and shares the job with Arthur Westerkamp. Together, the duo hopes that if everything goes well, they will be able to win one or two points. “If we get a draw against Remscheid, it would be more than just a surprise,” says Lars Entgens, setting his goals very modestly. Of course this doesn’t happen without reason. Because the guest will probably bring some of his top fighters with him to the North Eifel in order to avoid all eventualities.

One person who could stand in the way of the star ensemble is the newly crowned German U21 champion Arthur Akopjan. The Walheim home-grown plant is a good example of how successful youth work is carried out in the village of Walheim. The young master now seems to be ushering in a new era, especially in the Herthan team’s flagship discipline, which dominated the 73 class for many years.

There could be a meeting between the former Walheimer Alexander Gabler and “AA” on Saturday. Gabler was in the Hertha team a few years ago. An expected duel in the heavyweight division could also be very spicy. Fabius Igor Mbakom also followed the temptations of Remscheid and could become an opponent of Jonas Pütz. Or the newcomer from Walheim, Marc Schatten, will possibly deal with “Igor, the unbeatable”. Schatten is a former Leverkusen player.

Lars Entgens: “We hope that signing Marc will give us a little more stability in the heavyweight division.” Due to Jonas Pütz’s long-term injury, the club had to act in this weight class. The Hertha team also welcomed a new sports colleague, Luca Harmening. It strengthens the “lightweight department” up to 60 kilos. Among other things, Hertha had to give up Max Murawski, who moved to Witten.

Nevertheless, the Walheimers are also counting on this season that the recognized youth work will bear fruit this season. “We relied on our team to largely stay together,” says Lars Entgens, proud that there are hardly any spectacular departures. Unlike what happened last season, they are aiming for a victory in the elite class again in 2024. In 2023 there were only two draws. Points should flow from, among other things, the matches played at home with Bottrop (August 31st) and Spremberg (May 11th). There are away matches for the Entgens/Westerkamp team in Hamburg, Potsdam and Witten.
