Bundesliga 27th matchday – Saturday: Leverkusen turns the game around at the last minute, Leipzig fails against Mainz

Bayer 04 Leverkusen – TSG 1899 Hoffenheim 2:1 (0:1)

Bayer Leverkusen managed to win 2-1 (0-1) against TSG Hoffenheim in the last minute, thereby increasing the gap to the chasing teams for the time being.

In the first half, Leverkusen dominated the game, but Hoffenheim narrowed the spaces in their own half and defended well. The previously unbeaten league leaders failed on offense several times in the final third of the pitch and when finishing. After a good half hour, Hoffenheim rewarded themselves with the opening goal: Maximilian Beier appeared free in front of the goal after a nice one-two from the left and shot into the near corner (33′). In the remaining quarter of an hour both teams had chances, but Hoffenheim’s narrow lead remained.

Hoffenheim also defended very deeply in the second half, while Leverkusen pushed for the equalizer with a large portion of the game. The Hoffenheimers were only occasionally able to gain some breathing room with their own advances. At the beginning of the final phase, referee Deniz Aytekin examined an alleged Hoffenheim handball in the penalty area (72nd), which Leverkusen complained about. But Aytekin decided not to give a penalty after video evidence. It wasn’t until shortly before the end that Bayer turned the game around: Robert Andrich (88th) scored the equalizer with a header after a corner and a good save. A few minutes later, Patrik Schick (90+1) scored the winning goal, and it was over shortly afterwards.

RB Leipzig – 1. FSV Mainz 05 0:0 (0:0)

Mainz 05 saved a 0-0 (0-0) over time against RB Leipzig and thus gained an important point in the relegation battle. Leipzig, on the other hand, missed important points in the fight for fourth place and failed to capitalize on their own chances.

Only nine minutes had been played when referee Frank Willenborg pointed to the point: After a cross from Leipzig, Mainz’s Andreas Hanche-Olsen had deflected the ball into the goal, apparently with his hand. According to video evidence, there was no penalty, it was just the thigh. The rest of the first half offered few highlights. Although Leipzig dominated the game and had two good opportunities to take the lead, the team lacked speed and determination in attack. Loïs Openda was offside for an alleged goal in stoppage time (45’+1).

Mainz didn’t make any significant offensive moves, but did a good job against the favored Leipzig team. After the break, Leipzig pushed harder for the first goal, but were denied several times by the Mainz goalkeeper. The game became more intense, RB kept the pressure high. Thanks to the Mainz keeper, no more goals were scored.

Eintracht Frankfurt – 1. FC Union Berlin 0:0 (0:0)

Eintracht Frankfurt has to be content with a 0-0 (0-0) draw against Union Berlin in the final sprint for the European Cup places. With difficult opponents in the coming games, Eintracht could end up missing the points.

In an uneventful first half, the pitch, which had been badly damaged by the international game, caused problems for both teams, but Union got off to a better start. However, Yorbe Vertessen (4th) left the lead behind for the Berlin team. Only after around 20 minutes did Frankfurt become more active, but their game remained largely devoid of ideas. Eintracht often played too awkwardly, and Hugo Ekitike (22nd) was offside in one of Frankfurt’s better chances.

Union opened the second half again, but Mikkel Kaufmann’s shot (48th) after a bad pass from Frankfurt landed on the side netting. After that, only Eintracht played for a long time, much more lively and compelling than in the first half. Ekitike (57th) and Omar Marmoush (59th) were denied by Berlin goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow within a few minutes. When junior Dina Ebimbe (66th) tried, Union’s Danilho Doekhi saved on the line, while national player Robin Koch (85th) headed just over the Berlin goal shortly before the end.

Borussia Mönchengladbach – SC Freiburg 0:3 (0:1)

With the 3-0 win (1-0) against Borussia Mönchengladbach, SC Freiburg scored three important points in the fight for the European places. For Gladbach, however, the clear defeat further exacerbates the crisis.

Michael Gregoritsch (7th) scored the lead early in the first half. However, the hosts were not shocked, but shortly afterwards missed the equalizer twice. As a result, a balanced game developed, Gladbach showed themselves to be very dangerous, especially from corners.

At the beginning of the second half, the Gladbachers were caught cold again. Freiburg’s Merlin Röhl (47th) hit the corner from almost 20 meters. Just ten minutes later, Ritsu Doan (57th) made the preliminary decision after a nice combination. Afterwards, there was a shrill concert of whistles from the home fans in the stadium, which, however, could not change Freiburg’s confident victory.

SV Werder Bremen – VfL Wolfsburg 0:2 (0:1)

VfL Wolfsburg ended its negative series and won the northern duel against Werder Bremen 2-0 (1-0). The Wolfsburg team celebrated their first win after eleven unsuccessful games. It was Bremen’s fourth defeat in a row.

At the start of the game, Wolfsburg tried to control the game, but Bremen put the guests under pressure. Only a dangerous header onto the crossbar by Cedric Zesiger after a corner (11th) brought Wolfsburg into the game better. As a result, a duel developed at eye level, which lived more from intense duels than from spectacular goal scenes. In the quick final phase of the first half, Bremen’s Anthony Jung was shown a red card for an emergency stop (43′). The Wolfsburg team with Maxence Lacroix scored in the majority in stoppage time in the first half after a corner kick (45th + 4).

In the second half, Wolfsburg controlled the game, but only shone in a few situations. Lovro Majer initially missed the best opportunity to make it 2-0 (67th), before he lobbed to ensure the final score was not undeserved (84th). Previously, a player at Wolfsburg also had to leave the field: goal scorer Maxence Lacroix also had to leave the field with a red card due to an emergency stop (76′).
