With the victory, the Boston Celtics became the first team in the NBA to secure a spot in the playoffs. Jaylen Brown scored 37 points and Jayson Tatum added 26 points. Al Horford had 24 points.

Brown explained after the game that he himself was focusing on improving as a playmaker: “I’ve been working on my weaknesses. I feel like some of the things that were said about me last year are no longer being said can be.”

the essentials in brief

The Celtics had already won against the Suns on Sunday and scored a combined 40 points in both games. “They’re the best in the league at that,” Suns coach Frank Vogel said.

Dallas Mavericks @ Oklahoma City Thunder 119:126

Without their ailing superstar Luka Doncic, the Dallas Mavericks lost to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA and lost out for the first time after four consecutive wins. At 119:126, the Texans had to make do without the Slovenian; Doncic had suffered a thigh injury the day before in the home game against the Golden State Warriors (109:99).

The best thrower at OKC, which took first place in the West thanks to its success, was Canadian Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (31 points). For the Mavs, Kyrie Irving recorded 36 points as the evening’s top scorer, while national player Maxi Kleber had three points and two rebounds in just over 20 minutes of play. Dallas is eighth in the Western Conference and will face the NBA champion Denver Nuggets on Sunday (8:00 p.m., live on ProSieben MAXX and ran.de)

Philadelphia 76ers @ Milwaukee Bucks 105:114

Giannis Antetokounmpo was the Bucks’ standout man with 32 points and 11 rebounds. Brook Lopez added 19 points and seven rebounds, Damian Lillard 17 points and nine assists. Tyrese Maxey scored 30 points for the 76ers.

The Bucks trailed 80-83 early in the fourth quarter, but took an 88-87 lead after a layup by Bobby Portis with 8:42 left. AJ Green followed up with three free throws and a 3-pointer. After that, the Bucks didn’t give back their lead. The 76ers will meet the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday (11:55 p.m., live on ProSieben MAXX and ran.de).

Washington Wizards @ Houston Rockets 119:135

Jalen Green was the Houston Rockets’ standout man with 37 points. Fred VanVleet added 27 more points. What was remarkable was how well Houston compensated for Alperen Sengun’s injury. All of the Rockets’ starters scored in double figures.

“We played really well,” Green said. “Defense is our top priority because we are already very talented offensively.”

Los Angeles Clippers @ Chicago Bulls 126:111

Daniel Theis secured fourth place in the Western Conference with the Los Angeles Clippers. The Californians around the German world champions beat the Chicago Bulls 126:111. Theis recorded four points and three assists against his former team.

Paul George converted six 3-pointers and scored 28 points, while Kawhi Leonard added 27 points.

New York Knicks @ Portland Trail Blazers 105:93

Isaiah Hartenstein and the New York Knicks are in fourth place in the East after a 105:93 win over the Portland Trail Blazers. The center narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.

Jalen Brunson scored 45 points. Donte DiVincenzo and OG Anunoby each scored 12 points.
