Borussia Dortmund Struggles with Aging Squad and Young Talents on the Sidelines

Borussia Dortmund is going through a difficult season.

In the German Bundesliga, BVB has nothing to do with the title fight and, lying in fourth place, is instead fighting for a ticket to the UEFA Champions League. In the DFB Cup, the Black and Yellows had to admit defeat to VfB Stuttgart in the round of 16.

Only in the premier class does things go according to plan and Borussia are in the quarter-finals. Head coach Edin Terzic’s team will face Atletico Madrid there. All pairings >>>

Highest average age since 2003/04

It seems as if BVB has lost its identity. Young talents only get a little playing time; instead, more and more emphasis is placed on experienced professionals. This is also reflected in the average age of the squad (25.57 years, note), which was last this high 20 years ago.

In the 2003/04 season, Roman Weidenfeller and Sebastian Kehl were still talented, while Jens Lehmann played his last season in black and yellow.

Youngsters under Terzic are only reservists

Dortmund has some great talents in its squad.

However, Youssoufa Moukoko, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, Paris Brunner and Julien Duranville cannot make it through wildcard bets. Moukoko and Bynoe-Gittens in particular are said to be considering a move if the current situation does not improve.

At Brunner the situation is also complicated. Negotiations are currently underway to negotiate the star of the last U17 World Cup’s first professional contract. However, according to a current report from “Sport Bild”, the signs point to farewell.

When it comes to salary, the two sides are said to be far apart. Accordingly, the 18-year-old is demanding more than twice the usual BVB starting salary for youth players of 20,000 euros per month.
