Borussia Dortmund Fans Upset as Club Qualifies for FIFA Club World Cup

Borussia Dortmund has had a successful week – even though the black and yellow didn’t have to play in the Champions League. Still, there was something to celebrate. RB Leipzig’s elimination means they have qualified early for the new Club World Cup next year (find out more here).

Of course, that primarily means a lot of coal. Record-breaking prize money is expected to flow at the Club World Cup. Borussia Dortmund is receiving congratulations from the very top. However, the fans are not happy with it.

Borussia Dortmund: Infantino congratulates

Yes, even the FIFA President will have his say if BVB qualifies for his new prestige project. “Congratulations on qualifying for the brand new FIFA Club World Cup,” Gianni Infantino said in a short video on Instagram.

“Real love and the yellow wall are definitely moving to America next year,” declared Infantino beaming with joy – and thus antagonized parts of the Dortmund fan community.

Fans view the tournament critically

It’s no secret that many supporters are critical of this tournament, as it is FIFA’s answer to a Super League of the biggest European teams. Many fans see this as just another project driven by money and commercialism.

The fact that Infantino simply advertises in the video with the BVB slogan “Real Love” and even with the Dortmund South Stand – which of course doesn’t just move to another country – makes some people really angry.

“The yellow wall will stay in Dortmund forever, you idiot,” writes a fan on “X” with clear words in the direction of Infantino. “They’re marketing our south stand, but when it comes to protests like UCL reform, they’re ignored,” complains another.
