Two days before the next important basement duel in the Basketball Bundesliga at the Hakro Merlins Crailsheim on Saturday at 8 p.m. in the Arena Hohenlohe in Ilshofen, BG Göttingen is sending a signal of great trust.

Göttingen – The Violets and coach Olivier Foucart (39) agreed early on to continue their collaboration for at least another season.

Both sides decided well before the deadline not to make use of their exit options in the three-year contract.

“We continue to be convinced that Olivier is the right coach for us and are very satisfied with his work,” says BG managing director Frank Meinertshagen. “The position of head coach is extremely important for the success of a club – continuity in this area is an important building block for our further development.”

Foucart was promoted to head coach at the Violets in the summer of 2023 after two years as assistant coach under Roel Moors, who has since moved to Bonn. After a difficult start to the season, the Belgian stabilized the team and achieved important successes in the duels with direct competitors to stay in the league.

“I am very pleased about the trust placed in me because I really enjoy working for BG. The BG always wants to develop further, but can also assess its situation realistically,” says Foucart, who was previously, among other things, assistant coach of the Belgian senior national team and head coach of the Belgian U20 and U18 national teams. “Although it hasn’t been an easy season so far, I have always received full support from everyone at the club. This positive atmosphere is not a given, but it is extremely important in order to do good work.” (gsd/nh)

In the first leg there was the first of many extra-time thrillers for the Violets

What a game of nerves it was in BG’s first game of the season against Crailsheim! Only after double extra time did the Göttingen team record a 110:104 (99:99, 90:90) win against the Merlins on October 7, 2023 in front of 3,013 spectators. It was a late start to the season for coach Olivier Foucart’s team, as the team had previously played (and lost) in qualifying for the Champions League in Belek (Turkey) against Heroes Den Bosch. 16 seconds before the end of regular time, Karlis Silins hit a three-pointer against the Merlins to equalize. Since then there have been a number of personnel changes in the Crailsheim team. At the end of October, US guard Brandon Childress was brought in, but he was released almost two weeks ago. In November, the Merlins parted ways with coach Nikola Markovic and brought in Finn Jussi Laakso. League veteran Tremmell Darden (42) has been in the squad since the beginning of January and is still there. (gsd)
