BFM-TV, RMC and RMC Sport sold to Rodolphe Saadé’s CMA CGM group

After the rumors of recent months, Rodolphe Saadé is officially taking action to buy 100% of Altice Media (BFM-TV, RMC, RMC Sport, RMC Story, RMC Découverte, etc.). In a press release sent this Friday morning to the press, Altice France announced that it was entering into exclusive negotiations with the CMA CGM group of the Franco-Lebanese shipowner for the sale of all of its media: “The operation, which will be subject subject to customary prerequisites and obtaining applicable regulatory authorizations, is expected to be finalized during the summer of 2024.”

CMA CGM, already owner of the newspapers La Provence, Corse Matin and La Tribune, is considerably developing its subsidiary Whynot Media through this significant acquisition valued at 1.55 billion euros.

What “sporting” strategy for radio and TV?

It remains to be seen what the sporting strategy of CMA CGM, already the jersey sponsor of Olympique de Marseille, will be in its new media. On RMC, sport now occupies a large part of the airtime, from 3 p.m. to midnight live with events such as the Super Moscato Show, Rothen s’igne and L’After Foot. The pay channel RMC Sport has stopped massive investments in broadcasting rights since 2019, even if it co-broadcasts the posters for the Champions League and the Europa League until the end of the season. Today it is more like a complementary channel, refocused on combat sports and mainly MMA.

In his internal communication, Arthur Dreyfuss, CEO of Altice France, clarified to employees that “the CMA CGM project aims to continue the development of Altice Media, to continue to invest in technology and to always guarantee pluralism and editorial independence. As a sign of recognition of the quality of the work and the strength of our commitment, management was asked to continue the adventure in the same spirit as that which governed the last years of the group.
