Pavard: “That’s why I left Bavaria”

Benjamin Pavard raves highly about Milan. There is one aspect in particular that makes him feel so comfortable now.

At FC Bayern he wasn’t allowed to play his favorite position often enough – now Benjamin Pavard finally feels like he has arrived as a central defender.

The 27-year-old from Inter Milan has emphasized this once again. In an interview with Téléfoot, the Frenchman explained why he turned his back on the Bundesliga in the summer.

This is how Pavard explains his farewell to Bavaria

Pavard “didn’t necessarily” want to confirm that he was currently experiencing the best time of his career – but he did become a better player in Milan: “The role in central defense suits me the most. And that’s exactly why I left Bayern Munich, so I could play as a central defender.”

For the record champions, Pavard was mostly used as a right-back and won four championships as well as the Champions League and the DFB Cup.

Behind Matthijs de Ligt, Dayot Upamecano and Lucas Hernández (who left in the same summer and was replaced by Minjae Kim), Pavard hardly got a chance inside, which is why he ultimately moved to Inter in August 2023 for 30 million euros.

Central defender in the best defense in Italy

He has since played all 25 games as a central defender in a three-man defense under coach Simone Inzaghi and enthuses: “I am very happy, I have discovered a wonderful country where the fans are incredible. The passion of the fans in Italy is incredible, it’s wonderful for me.”

Inter has by far the best defense in Serie A with 14 goals conceded from 29 games and is confidently heading towards the championship title. In the Champions League, however, they failed in the round of 16 against Atlético Madrid (after penalties), and in the Coppa Italia they also ended in the round of 16 (1:2 against Bologna).

Pavard didn’t fare well in the CL exit in particular and was even described by the Gazzetta dello Sport as “completely overwhelmed” and declared the “worst player on his team”.
