Roger Schmidt traveled to FC Porto with the aim of at least temporarily taking the lead in the table.
What followed was a pitch-black evening for the ex-Salzburg coach. His team is completely defeated with a score of 0:5. A yellow-red card from Otamendi when the score was 3-0 in the 61st minute wasn’t particularly helpful.
“We don’t have to apologize, we didn’t do it on purpose. The players played so many good games, today wasn’t our day but the players prepared as well as they could. Sometimes football is like that and we have to deal with this situation,” said the German after the game.
“Sorry for this day”
Club boss Rui Costa speaks of a “disastrous evening”. “It’s a frustrating evening for the Benfica fans, for me, the players and the coaching staff. (…) I apologize for this day,” said the club boss.
After the Classico, Benfica is still only one point behind Sporting Lisbon, but their city rivals and league leaders now have a game in hand. Porto is third with 52 points.
Schmidt, who was recently linked to Bayern, is coming under increasing criticism from Portuguese newspapers following the bankruptcy.
