Belarusian Tennis Star Aryna Sabalenka Mourns Boyfriend’s Sudden Death

Aryna Sabalenka was eliminated in the round of 16 at the important tennis tournament in Indian Wells, USA, last week. Just a few days later, the current world number two had to cope with the loss of her boyfriend.

Former professional ice hockey player Konstantin Koltsow died unexpectedly at the age of just 42. The Belarusian Ice Hockey Federation confirmed the news. A statement said he “died suddenly.” There are no details about the cause of death yet. The Daily Mail reports that Koltsov died of a severed blood clot.

Sabalenko posted photos with her boyfriend Konstantin on her Instagram account.

“The Belarusian Ice Hockey Association expresses its deepest condolences to the family, friends and everyone who knew and worked with Konstantin,” said the Belarusian Ice Hockey Association homepage. Kolzow played for four years in the North American professional league NHL with the Pittsburgh Penguins. His current club Salawat posted a photo of Koltsow on Instagram with the words: “He was a strong and cheerful man who was loved and respected by players, colleagues and fans. He is forever etched in the history of our club. Koltsov, together with Salavat Yulaev, won the Russian championship (2008; editor) and the Gagarin Cup (2011; editor) and did a great job in the team’s coaching staff. Rest in peace.”

Sabalenka has not yet made an official statement about her boyfriend’s death. She was actually supposed to compete at the tennis tournament in Miami this week. The Belarusian is a two-time Grand Slam winner and won the Australian Open in 2023 and 2024. In 2019, Sabalenka lost her father early. He was also a former ice hockey player and died at just 43 years old.
