Beerschot Moves Closer to Promotion with Victory over Jong Genk

Beerschot consolidated its leadership position by winning 1-0 against Jong Genk on Friday evening in Antwerp during the 27th day of the Challenger Pro League. With this victory, Dirk Kuyt’s men move closer to promotion to the Jupiler Pro League three days before the end of the championship.

It was Marco Weymans who opened the scoring for the Rats with a superb left-footed shot from a cross from Verlinden (44th), just before the end of the first period.

Antwerp then got scared at the very end of the match. Jong Genk thought they would get an equalizer at the last second thanks to Akpan who regained the ball after a header from Genk goalkeeper Mike Penders which had hit the post (90+5th), but the Nigerian player was flagged offside.

In the other match of the evening, Dender won 0-1 on the pitch of Club NXT, who were playing for the first time under the orders of Robin Veldman, successor to Nicky Hayen, promoted to head coach of Club Brugge.

Dender opened the scoring thanks to Jordy Soladio, who took advantage of a poor clearance from the Bruges defense after an initial cross from Lennard Hens (41st). Timmy Simons’ men were satisfied with this single goal to win in West Flanders.

In the ranking, Beerschot has 53 units, 5 more than Lommel, who faces Patro Eisden on Sunday at 4 p.m. in a Limburg derby, and on Dender who, with his victory, takes third place, to the detriment of Deinze , one match less, which hosts Zulte Waregem on Saturday at 8 p.m.

Club NXT is 9th with 34 points, 1 point ahead of Jong Genk. The two U23 teams have a comfortable lead over Seraing, first in relegation with 23 points.
