BBL: Anton Gavel returns to Bamberg from Ulm as coach

Welcome back, it says for Anton Gavel: The 39-year-old is returning to the Bamberger Baskets: The former Upper Franconian basketball player will be the new coach of the Bamberg BBL team.

There has been a lot of speculation recently about Anton Gavel’s return to the Bamberg Baskets – now it is official: After being active as a player in Bamberg for five seasons from 2009 to 2014, the 39-year-old is returning to Freak as head coach from the coming season City.

Gavel, who crowned his BBL premiere season as head coach in Ulm by winning the 2023 German championship and in this series reached the final of the BBL Cup with ratiopharm Ulm, signed a three-year contract in Bamberg until the 2026 season /27.

Gavel and Ulm are currently in seventh place in the BBL table and hope to qualify for the play-offs with the team again this year.

Gavel is supposed to shape a new era

“I’m very happy to be returning to the place where I was able to celebrate my greatest successes as a player. Bamberg has always been like a home for me and my family has a lot in common with this great city. But until that happens, I’m focused “I am now completely focused on my current task here in Ulm in the current season,” Gavel is quoted as saying in a club statement.

Gavel is supposed to get the Bamberger Baskets back on the road to success. The Upper Franconians are currently only eleventh in the basketball league (BBL). Managing director Philipp Höhne hopes that Bamberg “will write a new chapter together with Gavel. But at the same time, we are all now required to give our best so that we can all proudly shape a new era together.”

Successful player in the BBL

As a player, Anton Gavel played 458 Bundesliga games (203 of them for Brose Baskets), 150 European Cup games (71 of them in the Bamberg jersey) and 101 international games (89 for Slovakia & 12 for the DBB team). In his twelve Bundesliga seasons, he won five German championships (2010 to 2013 with Bamberg, 2018 with FC Bayern) and won the German Cup four times (2010 to 2012 with Bamberg, 2018 with FC Bayern). Gavel ended his active career at the end of the 2018/19 season in Munich.

In 2019 he moved from the parquet to the coaching bench and coached the Ulm teams in the Junior Basketball Bundesliga and the Orange Academy. After three years, he succeeded head coach Jaka Laković in Ulm.
