As a replacement for Davies

Ian Maatsen has only played twelve games for Borussia Dortmund since his winter transfer from Chelsea and he no longer has to convince anyone in the Bundesliga. The 22-year-old Dutchman is already one of the best left-backs in the league and has a few options in the summer. Both a new attempt at parent club FC Chelsea and a longer stay with the black and yellow are possible, but now FC Bayern is also getting involved.

According to Sky, the German record champions have identified Maatsen as a possible successor to Alphonso Davies should the Canadian leave the club in the summer. In view of the salary expectations of around 6 million euros, which are still very far apart, this is a realistic scenario. With Raphaël Guerreiro (30) and Frans Krätzig (21), who is currently on loan, Bayern would currently have two left-backs in the squad for the coming season.

FC Bayern’s turn to Maatsen: Chelsea’s release clause is still above market value
Maatsen is under contract with Chelsea until 2026 and has a release clause that is said to be 35 million pounds, the equivalent of around 40 million euros. This is still a good deal above the market value, currently at 20 million. On Wednesday, the Dutch U21 international will be one of the winners in the Bundesliga update.
It is not known whether Maatsen can imagine moving to Munich. The youngster, who comes from near Rotterdam, had already planned to stay in London in the winter before the request came from Dortmund. He justified his decision to move in March primarily with the prospect of more playing time: “I had finished my loan spells, I thought I was ready to play against the big clubs. But sometimes things don’t work that way in football. I didn’t get many opportunities. It’s not the end of the world, but you have to be ready. You always have to believe in it because things can happen so quickly in football.”
