Bayern Munich Dominates Mainz 05: Harry Kane’s Hat Trick, Goretzka’s Brilliance, and Gnabry’s Magic Goal

Harry Kane’s three-pack, Leon Goretzka’s double, plus a magic goal from Serge Gnabry – FC Bayern Munich had a lot of fun in the 8-1 (3-1) win against Mainz 05.

“We had the self-confidence that we could hurt the opponent and stayed cool even in difficult phases,” said captain Manuel Neuer.

In addition to Kane (13th, 45th + 7, 70th), Goretzka (19th, 90th + 2) and Gnabry (66th), Thomas Müller (47th) and Jamal Musiala (61st) scored the goals for the team by coach Thomas Tuchel. Nadiem Amiri scored for Mainz (31st).

Three things that stood out to us.

1.) Munich lightness is back

Bayern pulled together against Lazio and kept what was probably their last remaining chance for the title alive. This has obviously released new strengths. As if in a frenzy, the Munich team dismantled Mainz 05 and scored dream goals like Serge Gnabry’s to make it 6-1 when the long-injured winger volleyed in with his heel and his back to the goal. A heel pirouette booth worth seeing.

“It was a very convincing win and a very good game from us over 90 minutes. We finally scored a lot of goals again, which makes it a lot more fun,” said Leon Goretzka on “Sky”.

Everything that FC Bayern had “often missed” this season, according to Goretzka, was suddenly back: enthusiasm, speed, brilliant chip balls behind the Mainz defense and merciless efficiency. Of the twelve shots aimed at Mainz keeper Robin Zentner’s goal, eight hit the target.

“We had very good offensive actions, both in the deep build-up of the game and in the transition movement after winning the ball. And that against an opponent who played well for a long time,” said Tuchel at the press conference.

The Bayern Express got rolling late this season, but maybe something can still happen in terms of the championship. “We have to stay in the flow. If Leverkusen wobbles again, we have to be there,” demanded Goretzka.

2.) Double Three Lions power

28, 29, 30. With the left, with the right and with the head – the complete program. Harry Kane did Harry Kane things again against Mainz. With 30 goals this season, the Englishman has equaled Uwe Seeler’s record from the 1963/64 season after just 25 games: the most goals in a Bundesliga premiere season.

He also initiated Jamal Musiala’s 5-1 with a great pass. “That was perhaps my best assist of my career,” said Kane.

The 30-year-old received a lot of praise from his coach. “I trust Harry with everything. He does what he always does. He scores and is a role model for young players. He proves week after week that it was the right decision to bring him here,” said Tuchel.

Robert Lewandowski’s season goals record (41 goals) is wobbling worryingly. If there is one player Bayern can rely on, it is the English national team captain.

But the Munich team now has a second player from the motherland of football who they can no longer do without. Eric Dier has established himself in central defense. His impressive record against Mainz: 100 percent tackle rate, seven ball conquests and 93 percent pass rate.

In an interview with The Times, Dier recently complained that his achievements were not being recognized at home. “I wouldn’t say the perception of me is positive in England. It’s like the chair in your living room that you’ve had for nine and a half years and that you don’t value,” said Dier.

He hasn’t heard from national coach Gareth Southgate for a year. In his current condition, the 30-year-old would certainly be an asset for the Three Lions.

3.) Goretzka shows his critics

When players were listed who could fall victim to FC Bayern’s planned squad restructuring in the summer, Leon Goretzka’s name was often included. Also with regard to a possible cross-list from national coach Julian Nagelsmann regarding the 2024 European Championship.

At the beginning of the year, Goretzka lost his regular place in midfield to Aleksandar Pavlovic. FC Bayern’s injury misery and the transfer of Joshua Kimmich to the right-back position brought the 29-year-old back into the starting line-up.

Goretzka thanked her in the fateful week with strong performances in different roles. Against Lazio he was the third central defender and built up the game from the back; against Mainz he acted more offensively and had Konrad Laimer behind him.

On Saturday he scored two goals and prepared two goals – a premiere in his 261st Bundesliga game. “There were a few friends of mine in the stadium that I haven’t seen for a long time. They immediately demanded a goal from me. It’s a funny story that it worked out with four scorer points,” said Goretzka on “Sky”. After a long dry spell, he is starting again.
