Basketball Master Coach Returns to Bamberg: A New Chapter Begins

Welcome back. Basketball master coach moves from Ulm to Bamberg, where he once enjoyed great success as a player. The managing director formulates big goals.

Master coach Anton Gavel returns to the Bamberg Baskets and is supposed to help the former series champions into a new era. The 39-year-old, who crowned his debut season as head coach in Ulm by winning the German championship and reached the cup final with ratiopharm ulm in this series, signed a three-year contract in Bamberg until the 2026/27 season.

I am very happy to return to the place where I celebrated my greatest successes as a player. Bamberg has always been like home for me and my family has a lot in common with this great city, said the former player. Gavel was active as a player in Bamberg for five seasons from 2009 to 2014. At that time, the Upper Franconians celebrated four of their nine championships.

The last title was seven years ago. The fact that Anton Gavel will be on the sidelines for Bamberg as head coach from next season fills us with great anticipation for the new season. Anton has a fixed and important place in Bamberg’s rich basketball history – now it’s time to write a new chapter with him, said managing director Philipp Höhne, according to an announcement on Wednesday.

At the same time, we are now all required to do our best so that we can all proudly shape a new era together, said Höhne. The Upper Franconians are currently only eleventh in the basketball Bundesliga.

At the age of 15, Anton Gavel left his Slovakian homeland to fulfill his dream of professional basketball in Germany. That was successful. As a player, Gavel played 458 Bundesliga games, 150 European Cup games and 101 international matches for Slovakia and Germany. Gavel celebrated a fifth championship title with FC Bayern in 2018.

We were very surprised that Anton was leaving us, said Ulm’s managing director Thomas Stoll in a statement. At the same time, the Ulm team presented a successor to Gavel in Ty Harrelson on Wednesday. Harrelson is still under contract with Rasta Vechta until the end of the season.
