Balaídos, on the way to a record

Celtismo is experiencing moments of excitement with the arrival on the first team bench of Claudio Giráldez, a coach trained in the youth team who shone with the Celtic reserve team and who has just debuted in the First Division with an important victory in Seville. After that victory and the good image offered by the Celtics at the Sánchez Pizjuán, the celestial fans are eagerly awaiting next Sunday’s match in Balaídos against Rayo Vallecano, another direct rival for permanence in the top category. Due to the expectation that this match has raised – there are hardly any tickets left for sale –, The Vigo stadium is expected to register one of the highest attendances of a season that has been one of the best in terms of spectator attendance since the celestial team’s last promotion to the top category, in the summer of 2012. In fact, Balaídos is on track to surpass this year the record of the 2013-14 season, in which a total of 376,863 fans were counted. With five games left to conclude this championship, the Val do Fragoso coliseum already has 274,575 attendees (more than the entire last year), with an average of 19,612 people per game, only surpassed by that of a decade ago, when Luis Enrique Martínez (now at PSG) took charge of the Vigo team.

On the occasion of the celebration of Celta’s centenary, Celtismo turned, as it had not happened in a long time, with its team and Balaídos offered an unparalleled appearance since the first League match against Osasuna with the interpretation of the C.Tangana anthem and the launch of the new entertainment stand in Marcador. Despite the negative results at home (the team took nine games to give the fans a victory), the response from the public was remarkable and almost always was above expectations. Thus, of the fourteen League games held this course at the Vigo coliseum, half registered more than 20,000 spectators out of a total capacity of 24,469 seats (according to club data). Barcelona’s visit is the one that generated the greatest attendance, with 23,096, although Real Madrid’s visit was very close (39 fewer spectators). At the other extreme is the match against Alavés, which was attended by 16,852 spectators. So far, it is the weakest entry of the season in Balaídos, although the game had an unusual time: on a Thursday (September 28) at 7 p.m.

So far in 2024, the attendance at the Vigo stadium has been important, as it only dropped below twenty thousand on one occasion, despite the fact that part of the fans began to show their disagreement with Rafa Benítez who said goodbye to Balaídos with a victory, against Almería, and which was followed by 18,005 spectators.

The arrival of Giráldez served as a shock to Celtismo, which had largely been demanding an opportunity in the elite for the Porriñés, also taking into account that he is a coach who bets on youth players. The debut of the new coach in Primera could not have gone better and the victory in Seville has caused a wave of enthusiasm in Celtismo and great interest in attending the match against Rayo Vallecano next Sunday (2 p.m.). Thus, yesterday there were only two tickets on sale at the virtual box office, apart from those located in the VIP area. Given the great demand, Balaídos is expected to record one of the best entries of the season and thus increase his average assists. For this reason, the record for attendance in a season at the Vigo coliseum could be surpassed during the club’s centenary.

In addition to Rayo, UD Las Palmas, Villarreal, and Athletic Club still have to go through Vigo and the season will close with the visit of Valencia. If the current average attendance is maintained (19,612 fans), Celta would close the season with a total of 372,635 spectators. It would be the second most important in the last twelve years. But given the expectation that Claudio Giráldez’s football project has aroused, it is very likely that this number will increase and with 2,289 more attendees, Celta would manage to close a record season, surpassing not only the one led by Luis Enrique Martínez but also the three by Eduardo Berizzo and the next one with Juan Carlos Unzué, in which the team displayed a better game and good sporting results, in addition to having the most important generation of youth players in its history.

However, Balaídos has not been able to place itself among the ten stadiums with the most spectators in LaLiga in this period. Except for one of the two seasons affected by the coronavirus pandemic (2020-21). His best records have taken him to eleventh place in Luis Enrique Martínez’s season and in Eduardo Berizzo’s first. Currently, Celta’s stadium also shares that position. In the current one, however, there is still the possibility of improving the final results and even surpassing those of the best year (2013-14). Against Rayo Vallecano, Celta begins the countdown to begin subtracting the 102,289 spectators that remain to surpass the attendance record after its last promotion to the First Division.
