Five Potential First-Round Matchups to Watch in the 2024 NBA Playoffs

Tyler Parker: The first time they faced each other this year was during a tournament game while Doc Rivers was still employed by ESPN. The Nuggets emerged victorious, followed by another win in December against Kyrie Irving’s absence. However, the third game, which took place nine days ago, resulted in a 107-105 victory for the Ricks and included a memorable buzzer-beater from Kyrie Irving. The offhand miracle shot, a combination of floater, skyhook, and runner, was captured in a four-minute, 51-second YouTube video from multiple angles. Irving’s exceptional ball-handling skills and impressive shot-making abilities allowed him to pull off such a daring move. His smooth style on the court may seem unconventional, but it is undeniably effective. Although he is considered one of the most skilled offensive players in the league, he is not among the top two in this fictional series. Now, let’s focus on those players.

Nikola Jokic, the impressive player for the Denver Nuggets, has a unique ability to dominate on the court, particularly during the playoffs. He showcases a wide range of moves like the Sombor shuffles, fadeaway moonrakers, and colorful tattoos on his biceps. His chemistry with teammate Aaron Gordon is at an all-time high, as they seem to communicate effortlessly on the court. And let’s not forget his close friend and teammate, Jamal Murray, who may not have been selected as an All-Star this year, but has a track record of performing like one in previous playoff seasons. Together, they have a reliable pick-and-roll and are known for clutch performances that leave opponents heartbroken.

The game between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Los Angeles Lakers.

Howard Beck believes that in the NBA playoffs, experience is more valuable than youth. While this may not always be the case, it adds to the excitement of blindly following this belief. Therefore, he is eager to see the Los Angeles Lakers face off against the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round.

As someone new to Los Angeles, I am often around individuals who are eagerly anticipating the downfall of the Lakers in order to distract themselves from their mediocre performance. While I do not personally align with this mindset, I do appreciate the concept of learning from failure. Additionally, I find the idea of self-discovery through challenging experiences, such as walking on hot coals, intriguing. This is precisely what a first-round playoff series against the Pelicans, who have recently surpassed the struggling Clippers for fourth place in the Western Conference, would provide.

Although Dallas has its own limitations, such as Jason Kidd’s uncreative offensive strategies and questionable lineup choices that often frustrate Mavericks fans, the duo of Irving and Doncic can not only rival Edwards in scoring and aggressiveness, but also intimidate opponents who have yet to demonstrate the necessary killer instinct in high-stakes situations. I may have just forecasted an imaginary upset, but I believe the Mavericks will win in seven games.

In other words, I require the Clippers to undergo a stress test in order for me to have confidence in them once more. If Ivica Zubac is able to hold his own against a frontcourt pairing of Zion Williamson and Jonas Valanciunas, and if James Harden can withstand pressure from Herb Jones and Trey Murphy, then I will be prepared to support this team again. There is a potential path for the Clippers to prove their seriousness, with Kawhi Leonard taking hits from Williamson while also attacking CJ McCollum and JV on the opposite side.

The Milwaukee Bucks will go head-to-head with the Miami Heat.

Meanwhile, the Timberwolves, currently ranked third in the Western Conference, are striving to prove their success during the regular season through a strong performance in the playoffs. A glance at their team lineup reveals several players with uncertainties regarding their postseason performance. Karl-Anthony Towns, who suffered a knee injury earlier this month and is expected to return in the early stages of the playoffs, has shown a tendency to disappear when his team needs him most. Rudy Gobert typically struggles during this time of year. And although Mike Conley and Jaden McDaniels have had impressive seasons, their offensive limitations hinder a team that often struggles in close games. As a result, Anthony Edwards is forced to perform miraculous feats every game.

The New Orleans Pelicans are competing against the Los Angeles Clippers in a game.

Logan Murdock: The last time the Mavericks were in the postseason, Luka Doncic powered them into the Western Conference finals as a 4-seed. The run peaked during an epic take-down of the top-seeded Phoenix Suns, when Doncic sent Devin Booker and the last semblance of Peak Chris Paul home in the most embarrassing collapse in recent memory. Two years later, the Mavericks have added Kyrie Irving into the fold, and upgraded the frontcourt around their two star guards.

However, let’s consider the banner, Michael Malone. The Nuggets are still the reigning champions, and it would require a heroic effort to dethrone them from their title. At first glance, it appears that the Mavericks may not have enough strength to compete, but with players like Doncic and Irving, they may be able to put in some strong performances. It would be entertaining to watch them attempt to challenge the Nuggets.

This could potentially be LeBron’s final and most opportune moment to lead his team to a successful postseason (as every opportunity at this stage may be his last). For SGA, this marks their initial and most promising opportunity to achieve a deep run – possibly even reaching the Finals. Undoubtedly, the Thunder possess remarkable talent. However, their lack of experience may hinder their ability to defeat multiple teams with more seasoned players, such as the Lakers, Clippers, Nuggets, Suns, Warriors, or a combination of them.

Different styles causing conflict, clashes in storytelling, growing competition and longstanding enemies. With the standings constantly changing, these are the matchups we’re anticipating.

A matchup featuring Doncic and Jokic signifies a game where both star players showcase their astounding abilities. They perform mesmerizing feats, like magic tricks. The back-and-forth plays could resemble the iconic MJ-Bird McDonald’s advertisements for the classic game of H-O-R-S-E. Their assists are extraordinary and unexpected, thrown blindly or over their heads with precision. They operate outside the norm, seemingly foreseeing the movements of their opponents on the court. It would be hard to find better play-making skills, almost like watching a masterful quarterback in action. The ManningCast would be filled with constant admiration. Doncic and Jokic have an impressive range of talents. Plus, they share a special bond with each other off the court. It’s not the same type of love that exists between Doncic and Devin Booker, who should just make things official, but a deep connection that is evident in the way they write each other’s names on their belongings, with hearts dotting the “o”s.

Rob Mahoney: Let’s imagine a series that has all the elements we could want. It will bring revenge for the playoffs, as the Bucks were embarrassed and changed as a team in their first round loss last year. It’s a chance for teams to work through their tension around the Damian Lillard trade, and for the Heat, the lack thereof. (Do you remember when Jimmy Butler casually asked the league to investigate the Bucks for tampering?) We’ll see a coaching battle between Doc Rivers, trying to overcome his previous playoff struggles, and Erik Spoelstra, a certified playoff legend. Jimmy Butler will be at his best and Giannis Antetokounmpo will be tested like never before. There’s a possibility of a fight between Patrick Beverley and the entire Miami team, known as the hardest working and toughest in the NBA. And most importantly, it’s a matchup that always delivers, with contrasting styles that will push each team to their limits. Milwaukee and Miami may have some similarities, but they are different enough to provide great basketball every time they meet. It’s a compelling and exciting matchup that has given us fantastic basketball in the past, and likely will again.

I am skeptical about the Lakers’ ability to compete for another championship. I’m also unsure if the Thunder are prepared for the national spotlight. However, this would be an incredibly revealing challenge of our beliefs and beloved principles.

Luka Doncic’s performance in the playoffs is exceptional. He has a dominant presence on the court and has been compared to a god or a great savior. He is a skilled player with a fearless attitude and a tendency to cause trouble. He is responsible for a significant portion of his team’s points and puts his all into every game. Even when he is faced with defeat, he does not go down without a fight. Although his team has not yet reached their ultimate goal, he has already achieved more in the playoffs than most players in the league. He faces high expectations and criticism, but it is because he has proven himself to be capable of reaching greater heights. His consistently impressive statistics may not have the same impact as they once did because we have become accustomed to his greatness. When he dropped 73 points against the Hawks, it was treated as if it was the end of the world. As Kendrick Perkins would say, a cow can’t fly, but it can certainly enjoy a slice of pie. Atlanta’s defense was lacking, and Luka’s performance exposed their weaknesses. It was a masterful display of talent that left me in awe. This game was like an unholy ritual, and it made me grateful to have the ability to witness it. The devil himself would be pleased with Luka’s incredible skills.

The matchup between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Dallas Mavericks.

Here’s a scenario (and this is really just for the benefit of my Lakers group chat) that would give Clippers and Celtics fans aneurysms: Both teams face early exits, and Boston, in a last-ditch effort to connect the Jays, signs Harden to the vet minimum this summer. I also like mess.

If the screws remain loose and there is a smooth flow to the games, we are likely to witness skillful and visually diverse playmaking from both teams. However, even if it turns into a physical and strategic battle with last-minute shots, it will still be captivating. The opposing team, the Ricks, lacks the power to contain Jokic – not even the vast resources of Rome can stop him – but Dereck Lively II, with his impressive agility, will be present and will showcase his athleticism and speed. Furthermore, Dallas has strengthened their team after the trade deadline, particularly with the addition of Daniel Gafford from the Wizards, who brings with him extraordinary strength and energy.

Based on the current performance of both teams, I am more likely to support the Pelicans. If that’s how it has to be, I do not want to watch the current Clippers team (playing lazily and disconnected with a subpar defense) on my TV past April. I would rather spend the summer considering whether Paul George would look better in a Sixers or Knicks jersey and watch Williamson establish himself as a rising star, causing major issues for opposing defenses.
