B.Hope Initiative Bridges Experience Gap for Remote Island Youth in Okinawa Through Basketball Coaching Program

At “B.LEAGUE ALL-STAR GAME WEEKEND 2024 IN OKINAWA,” B.Hope will focus on the issue of disparities in experiences due to the remoteness of the remote islands of Okinawa Prefecture, as well as disparities in experiences due to various family backgrounds. We have carried out activities aimed at providing opportunities for children to have experiences that will connect them to their futures and to help them live a life with dreams.

Implementation background: Aiming to rectify the experience gap between remote islands

Children on remote islands in Okinawa Prefecture face the challenge of not being given opportunities to learn and grow due to their physical distance from the main island and the environment in which they were born on remote islands. In particular, for children who play basketball, “We don’t have many members so we can’t play 5-on-5 in our daily practices,” “There’s only one school on the island, so we have to go to the main island to organize external games,” and “We have to go to the main island to play outside games.” The environment in which children can play basketball is limited due to the current situation where it is difficult to receive instruction.

This initiative utilizes SoftBank Corp.’s technology to allow children to receive specialized instruction from professional coaches even when they are on a remote island. We aimed to provide opportunities.

Junior high school basketball club members from Izena Island and Ishigaki Island spend about two months working hard to improve their skills.

On the day of the event, January 14th, the junior high school students stood on the court at Okinawa Arena, watching warmly from the audience, and competed against remote islands through the “Jr. Skills Challenge (*1).” All-star players Yuki Kawamura of the Yokohama Bee Corsairs and Keita Imamura of the Ryukyu Golden Kings also appeared. Each encouraged the junior high school students, saying, “(The key to the Skills Challenge) is to do your best (Kawamura)” and “I want you to do your best without regrets” (Imamura).

(*1) Boys and girls from each school form pairs, and after one person completes a dribble, pass, and free throw, the other person successfully completes a dribble, pass, and jump shot in that order, and both schools compete for the best time.

The duo of Izena Junior High School’s Dimituljevic Haila and Riki Irie, who took the lead, finished in 44.6 seconds as their teammates watched from the bench.
Next, in the Ishigaki Ohama Junior High School challenge, Yahiro Narisoko, the representative female athlete, said, “I’m very nervous,” but she smoothly cleared the obstacles and passed the baton to Tomu Yamane, the representative male athlete, in 42.2 seconds. Goal. There were scenes where the junior high school students exchanged high fives with Kawamura and Imamura, making it a dream-like moment for them.

Kawamura also supported the junior high school students’ challenge.

The victorious Ishigaki Junior High School was presented with a ball signed by the players.

In an interview after the “Jr. Skills Challenge,” a representative player from Izena Junior High School said, “I’m glad I had fun playing (Mr. Irie),” and “(during remote coaching), ‘Be careful about the direction of your fingertips.’ Because of this advice, I always focused on my fingertips during shooting practice after that.I think the ball is now more stable and flies straighter (Hara-san).”

Mr. Tsukasa Obama, the school’s basketball club advisor, saw the two students responding to the interview and said, “I was surprised that they were speaking openly in front of adults,” and continued. “In this day and age, we can get information on the Internet, but we don’t often get responses or learn a lot of things.I think that’s what left an impression on both of us, and we practiced it.” I think the children were happy. The fact that they were able to demonstrate their abilities in front of a larger audience than the island’s population (1,274 people as of December 31, 2020) was a sign of their growth. “I will,” he said.

In an interview with Ohama Junior High School, he said, “I took on the challenge keeping in mind what I was taught through remote coaching, but I couldn’t get the last shot and was disappointed. However, I was happy that I was able to win a solid victory.” (Tomu Yamane from the same school) ),” and Mr. Narisoko from the same school also shared his thoughts, saying, “In this Skills Challenge, I learned how to overcome stress.I want to continue to make use of that knowledge and work hard.” He gave it to me.

Ryukyu Golden Kings U15 assistant coach Masashi Nakamura, who was instructing the junior high school students this time, said, “It’s rare for an adult to play in front of so many people on a big stage, but the kids played to their heart’s content.” I was really moved by the experience.I believe that this kind of experience will lead to the future of these children,” he said, looking back on the culmination of this initiative.

In addition, Takanari Sasaki of SoftBank Corp., who supported this project from a technology perspective, said, “The environments in which children engage in sports vary depending on the region. We were able to provide this opportunity.”

There are many areas, such as remote islands, that have issues with the environment in which children participate in sports. In addition, starting in 2023, athletic club activities in school education will be gradually transferred to regional areas, and issues such as securing instructors and facilities to accommodate them have become an issue. We hope that this initiative will help solve the problem in sports instruction for children.

B.LEAGUE Hope will continue to expand the possibilities of children and promote actions that will lead to the future.
