Ayuso dominates Ganna and Vingegaard in Tirreno-Adriatico stage 1 time trial

Filippo Ganna failed to complete the hat-trick on the Lido di Camaiore seafront. Winner of the inaugural Tirreno-Adriatico time trial the last two years, the Italian rider was in fact dominated by a second by Juan Ayuso on Monday, while Ethan Vernon completed the podium.

Ayuso was particularly comfortable in the turns and efficient in restarts on the flat 10 km course, designed in a round trip, to win the third time trial of his career, after successes in stage on the Tour de Romandie and that of Switzerland last season.

Vauquelin finishes 8th

The 21-year-old UAE leader in the “race of the two seas” takes control of the general battle since he beat Jonas Vingegaard by 22 seconds. The Dane from Visma-Lease a bike, despite a new futuristic helmet, had to settle for 9th place. Among the other general contenders, Jai Hindley (12th) lost 24 seconds to the Spanish race leader.

Note the good performance of Kévin Vauquelin, who beat Vingegaard by 4 seconds (8th place at the finish), which bodes well as the leader of Arkéa-B & B aims for a place in the general this week. Romain Grégoire also defended himself well with a 10th place, in the same second as Vingegaard. The Groupama-FDJ puncher will go hunting for the stages a little later in the week.
