Why? After Sunday’s derby win against FK Austria Wien (3-0), Grüll attracted negative attention at a fan celebration. Among other things, he sang homophobic fan songs with captain Guido Burgstaller (formerly of Schalke, Nuremberg and St. Pauli). Both have now been suspended for six competitive games, three of them conditionally, due to discrimination. This is what suspended sentences are called in Austria.

Other teammates were also convicted: Thorsten Schick received a five-game ban, three of which were conditional, for the same offense. Maximilian Hofmann and goalkeeper Niklas Hedl were suspended for three games, two of them conditionally, for violating the principles of fair play.

Managing director Steffen Hofmann was suspended for two months, one of which was suspended, for defamation. In addition, everyone must take part in three one-hour workshops in schools on the topic of discrimination within twelve months.

It started with insults against the FK district. “Favoriten is the largest Hurns district”. Then it got really tasteless.

The fans, players and coach, shouted: “We are not orschwamen violets”. Violets mean the purple opponents. “Arschwarmer” is a common insult in Austrian football. The homophobic chants were filmed and then shared on the “X” platform.

SK managing director Steffen Hofmann had to apologize last Monday for insulting the Austrians as “assholes” using a megaphone. His words were not intended for the public and “despite all the rivalry, that was and is not appropriate.”

The club then published a statement on Tuesday in which captain Burgstaller, on behalf of the players involved, apologized for the derailments.

“Unfortunately we cannot undo this mistake. “In this way, we would like to clearly distance ourselves from any discrimination and homophobia and apologize to everyone who we have directly or indirectly offended through our behavior,” said the professional.

And further: “We are aware that we have a role model effect, and unfortunately we absolutely did not live up to this role with the action after the game.”

Grüll also shared the same wording statement on his Instagram channel as an apology for the incident. In a conversation with Werder, the attacker showed insight.

Now the verdict is clear.
