Atlético de Madrid Triumphs in La Liga Clash Against Betis Sevilla

Atlético de Madrid has returned to success in La Liga. In the absence of Antoine Griezmann who is still injured, the Colchoneros pocketed three precious points against Betis Sevilla, a direct competitor in the race for Europe (2-1). After three matches without a victory in all competitions, the Madrilenians have taken a thirteen point lead over their opponents of the day and are now putting pressure on the shoulders of Athletic Club, their recent tormentor in the semi-final of the Spanish Cup. For Betis, their sixth place is threatened.

The Civitas Metropolitano was full for this top-of-the-table meeting. With 61,901 spectators in Madrid, Diego Simeone’s men managed to win at the end of a two-sided match. Very authoritarian from the kick-off, the Rojiblancos exerted a first conclusive pressure but Rodrigo De Paul did not target his attempt (4th). Caught in the vice of Atlético, the visiting defense got confused on a cross from Memphis Depay. Hector Bellerin’s clearance bounced off the leg of German Pezzella and Rui Silva was unable to prevent the opening of the score despite himself with a gag goal (8th, 1-0).

Morata, frustrated then released

Very active on the attacking front despite the absence of Griezmann, Alvaro Morata created several opportunities to double the lead. The Spanish international first obtained a penalty which he took himself, but Rui Silva emerged victorious from the duel (28th). Just as restless, Depay called on Rui Silva several times without shaking the nets (13th, 24th, 43rd). But at the very end of the first period, Atlético saw their hard work rewarded with a second goal thanks to Morata, attentive after a shot from De Paul pushed back by Rui Silva (45th, 2-0). Thanks to his twentieth goal in all competitions this season, the Madrid center forward offered a safety cushion to his team before the break.

A far from negligible comfort in reality, since the Béticos entered with much more offensive intentions from the start of the second act. After a quarter of an hour to get back on track, the Andalusians took advantage of a magnificent curling shot from incoming William Carvalho to reduce the gap and reignite the suspense (62nd, 2-1). Without a reflex save from Jan Oblak to divert the ball to his left post (79th), Betis would undoubtedly have equalized. But the observation remains implacable: in twelve La Liga matches against Manuel Pellegrini, Diego Simeone has never lost a single confrontation (eight wins, four draws). The black streak therefore continues for the Chilean coach, and Atlético continues to be unplayable at home in the league with 25 matches without defeat at the Wanda Metropolitano.
