According to information from the streaming service Dyn, Anton Gavel (39) is moving to the Bamberg Baskets as head coach for the new season and is returning to his old home: As a player, Gavel was active for the Franconians from 2009 to 2014 and became German four times with the then Brose Baskets Champions (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013) and three cup winners (2010, 2011, 2012)!

Now the move from the reigning German champion ratiopharm Ulm to Bamberg. Gavel took over the Swabians in 2022 and sensationally celebrated the club’s first ever German championship last summer.
Ulm’s sports director Thorsten Leibenath did not want to comment on the change to SPORT BILD.

Gavel sees his task in Ulm as completed and follows the call of his heart back to Bamberg. There won’t be anything more than the title for Ulm: they lost that just a few weeks ago Cup final against Bayern and were eliminated from the Eurocup this week, losing in the round of 16 against the Spaniards from Joventut Badalona.
Gavel’s wife is also said to have advocated for a move to Bamberg; she comes from the region. The couple is also said to own an apartment in Bamberg.

The Bambergers only fired head coach Oren Amiel (52) in mid-February, one day after the slap in the Frankenderby at the Würzburg Baskets. Assistant coach Arne Woltmann then took over Amiel’s position on an interim basis.
Now the really big solution in Bamberg, which will warm the hearts of all the club’s fans: Anton “Tonno” Gavel is returning and should finally build on old successes with the club. This season the Baskets are in no man’s land in the table and are in danger of missing out on tenth place and thus the play-ins.
