Ankoay 3×3 Team Gears Up for Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Hungary

The 3×3 Ankoay are preparing for the TQO in May which will take place in Debrecen, Hungary.

45 days before the opening of the Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OQT), which will take place from May 16 to 19 in Debrecen, Hungary, apart from the four members of the Ankoay national team – Arnol Solondrainy, Livio Ratianarivo, Elly Randriamampionona, Rick-Ley Loubacky – two other players, Fiary Johnson Rakotonirina and Anthony Nelson Rasolomanana, have resumed training at the Palais des Sports Mahamasina for two weeks.

Led by national coach Jean de Dieu Randrianarivelo, or coach Deda to those in the know, the pre-selected members of the Ankoay national team repeated what they learned from Serbian expert Danilo Lukic, founder of the Academy high level 3X3 from Serbia to Monastir, Tunisia.

Currently, two days per week, Fridays and Saturdays, have been chosen as training days due to lack of availability of certain players. The training is focused mainly on technical and tactical strengthening, especially on the physical condition of each player, in order to allow the Malagasy team to fill the gaps observed during the World Cup in 2022 and during the World Cup. Africa recently in Egypt.

Intensive training

There are still forty-five days left, but to refine the strategies on the four corners of the field, this period of time seems insufficient given the scale of the event, the Olympic qualification.

“What awaits Ankoay will not be easy as they will face the fifteen best national teams from several countries, including Lithuania, Germany, Switzerland, among others. Our work focuses on physical conditions, marksmanship and coordination on the field in order to find automatisms and complementarity between the players,” declares the coach.

Training will resume after the Easter break and will intensify as the event approaches. The goal for the Ankoay national team is to be ready and sharper for the 2022 World Cup.

Compared to the experiences of the Ankoay 3×3 national team during the African Championship, with the bronze medal in their pocket in December 2023, Falihery Nasolomanjaka, a supporter of the Ankoay 3×3 national team, gave his opinion: “ Physically, the Malagasy players suffered during the African Championship. For the Olympic qualifying tournament, all opponents are well above the African level. Without preparation worthy of the name, Madagascar will have no chance against professional players. While there is still time, the members of the Ankoay national team must improve their shooting accuracy from all angles of the court, because their success will depend on it.”
