Anis Hadj Moussa: The Rising Star of Algerian Football

He is one of the new additions to Algeria’s list for this March gathering. The former Switzerland coach also launched him into the deep end last Friday by giving him 20 minutes of play during the victory against Bolivia (3-2). Interesting, the 22-year-old right winger will still be eagerly awaited this Tuesday against South Africa. While he hatched late, some Algerian supporters already see in Hadj Moussa the replacement for Riyad Mahrez, absent for this gathering and who annoyed during the gang’s last cataclysmic CAN in Belmadi. He was born in Paris and trained at RC Lens

Born on February 11, 2002 in Paris to Algerian parents, Anis Hadj Moussa cut his teeth in the Paris suburbs. The dynamic winger started at US Torcy before his qualities allowed him to join FC Montfermeil. Brilliant with the Seine-Saint-Denis team, the Parisian caught the eye of RC Lens, which he joined in the summer of 2018. Initially playing with the Sang et Or U19 team, Hadj Moussa tasted his first appearances with the reserves at the end of the 2020-2021 season. Author of 22 appearances with the B team of the Artesian club, he had an interesting season, but no professional contract was offered to him to settle permanently with the professional group.

A start in the Belgian third division to get started

From then on, a departure is necessary. And under the leadership of Mohamed Dahmane, a former player with a rich career also trained in Lens, Hadj Moussa made the decision to leave the north of France to join the Belgian third division and Olympic Charleroi. Interviewed recently by the Algerian media Algerian EveningDahmane had rightly expressed himself on the qualities of his younger brother: “having experienced the same trajectory as him as a player, I reached out to him and from the first day it stuck with Anis but also his family to whom I explained the project that we were going to put around Anis for the relaunch. (…) Anis has assets that any coach and selection would like to have at their disposal. It’s simple, he’s an artist on the pitch, when he touches the ball you know that something is going to happen, he is capable of igniting the public with high-class technical gestures but above all he does part of those rare players who can unblock a complicated situation by knocking down the opponent with a single action. In football, you have the collective and individuals who make you win a match while making the hearts of the supporters vibrate. Anis is both, he learned to tear himself apart physically on the pitch while defending and brilliant offensively.»

A constant progression since

The choice to start from lower to bounce back better paid off: in his first season in Belgian D3, Hadj Moussa compiled 8 goals in 33 matches. And while he knew that his move to Charleroi was only a stage, the left-hander considered offers the summer following his arrival. A wise choice because Patro Eisden Maasmechelen, a second division team from our neighbors across Quiévrain, is knocking on the door. Neither one nor two, Hadj Moussa responds favorably to the call from the upper echelon and once again brings everyone into agreement. Explosive despite shortcomings in the last gesture, his unpredictable side seduces and after only six months (2 goals and 2 assists in 18 matches) in the Walloon club, Hadj Moussa goes even higher, geographically and in terms of level, and joins the Netherlands by signing with Vitesse Arnhem.

Several former Dutch players have dubbed him

Arrived last January within a team in difficulty in the Eredivisie (17th in the championship), the former RC Lens shines and allows the Arnhem club to have a real offensive weapon in the race to maintain. Always as lethal via his little arabesques, the native of Paris also shows his best in finishing, as evidenced by his two goals in eight appearances so far. Quickly adopted by Vitesse fans, he quickly became essential in the eyes of Edward Sturing who, after leaving him on the bench during the first two matches, lined him up for the entirety of the other six. An exhibition which allows Anis Hadj Moussa to put himself forward. And that’s good, some former big names in Batavian football are unanimous on this subject. While Rafael Van der Vaart already considers him a “very great player”, Ibrahim Affelay was full of praise for the 22-year-old: “it now benefits from a different status. Hadj-Moussa can go higher than Vitesse.»

The Eredivisie big names would already be fighting for him

The former FC Barcelona winger doesn’t think he’s saying that well. Indeed, all this enthusiasm around him in the Netherlands opens doors for Anis Hadj Moussa. With a rare style of left-handed right winger and constantly provocative like Riyad Mahrez, he is emulated in the Eredivisie and several big names would assiduously observe the rest of the Algerian’s adventures. Only loaned to Vitesse Arnhem, it is difficult to imagine him staying with the Yellow and Black in the event of a descent. It is also difficult to see him return to Patro Eisden after his prodigious six months with the Batavian club. Therefore, PSV and Feyenoord Rotterdam would be very attentive to his situation, according to several Dutch sources. Given the exponential trajectory of his career, Hadj Moussa can aim for the heights and his future club can ensure a bright future with him in its ranks.
