Angelique Kerber’s Winning Streak Ends at Indian Wells, Alexander Zverev Advances to Quarterfinals

As of: March 13, 2024 12:09 p.m

The winning streak of former Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber at the WTA tournament in Indian Wells is over. The 36-year-old from Kiel lost the duel between the “tennis moms” against Caroline Wozniacki 4:6, 2:6. In contrast, Hamburg’s Alexander Zverev reached the quarterfinals.

“I could see that she was struggling with her back,” Wozniacki said of her friend Kerber, “I’m just happy that I won. I don’t take anything for granted, I took a very long break. Now I’m back and just enjoy it.”

Wozniacki returned to the tennis tour last year after the birth of her second child. Kerber followed at the beginning of 2024 and gave her most convincing performance to date on her comeback tour in Indian Wells.

Kerber had a false start to the game

The Kiel native, who gave birth to her daughter Liana in February 2023, appeared confident in California. After three previous wins, Kerber got off to a false start against Wozniacki; she lost two of her first three service games, but fought back again. In the second set, the German had her back treated at 1:4 and was unable to turn things around. Wozniacki will face top-seeded Pole Iga Swiatek in the quarterfinals.

The North German seems to feel comfortable in the dual role of mother and tennis professional. “The combination of doing something I love and having her by my side is the biggest inspiration for me,” said Kerber, who will now travel on to Miami.

Zverev defeats Australian Alex de Minaur

In contrast to the woman from Kiel, Olympic champion Alexander Zverev is in the quarterfinals of the tennis masters tournament in Indian Wells – for the second time in his career. The 26-year-old from Hamburg won his round of 16 match against Australian Alex de Minaur 5:7, 6:2, 6:3 after 2:47 hours. In the round of the last eight, Zverev will face Wimbledon winner Carlos Alcaraz (Spain).

“I can’t remember ever having a better match in the wind than today,” said the Hamburg player after the game against de Minaur and self-critically noted: “When you’re a set and a break behind, you have to think about whether whether you want to continue playing or whether you have to leave the pitch in 20 minutes. I had to play differently on both sides and I did that well today.”
