After a bumpy start, Angelique Kerber is getting better and better on her comeback after her maternity break and can now look forward to a special mothers’ duel at the tennis classic in Indian Wells.
At the Masters 1000 event in the Californian desert, the former world number one will meet her long-time friend Caroline Wozniacki in the round of 16 on Tuesday (local time). Like Kerber, the Dane is on tour as a mother (of two).
Wozniacki, herself a former women’s number 1, had repeatedly provided Kerber with valuable advice over the past few months.
Long maternity break for Kerber
“We are good friends and will still be friends after the game,” said Kerber after her surprising 6:4,7:5 over number 17 seeded Russian Veronika Kudermetowa.
For the first time since May 2022, Kerber achieved three wins in a row. At that time she won the clay court tournament in Strasbourg.
Kerber has been mother to daughter Liana since February 2023 and recently made her European comeback in Linz after an 18-month maternity leave.
