Algerian Judo Team Shines at 2023 African Games, Secures Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medals

The Algerian Judo selection (Men-Ladies) won three medals (Gold, Silver and Bronze) in the individual competitions of the 2023 African Games which take place in Accra (Ghana), from March 8 to 23, 2024.

Judokate Amina Belkadi won the Gold medal in the -63kg category after beating Cameroonian Etoua Blok in the final.

Algerian judoka Wael Ezzine won the silver medal in the -73kg category after losing in the final to Tunisian Alaeddine Benchalabi, who won the gold medal.

The bronze medal went to Kais Moudathir in the -66kg category after beating Kenyan Felix Okoko in a repechage match, while Faiza Aissahine (-52kg) and Zina Bouakache (-57 kg) lost bronze after their defeat in a repechage match in front of their opponents respectively South African Sharn Gressel and Tunisian Demour Meriem.

As for Abdelhamid Zemmit (-81kg), Imad Aghilas Benazoug (-81kg), Houaria Kaddour (-48kg) and Dihya Benchalal (-70kg), they were all eliminated from the group stage.

The individual competition will continue on Thursday with the entry into competition of four Algerians. They are Abdallah Fella (-100 kg) and Mohamed Mehdi Lily (+100 kg) for men, Louiza Achallal (-78 kg) and Sonia Asselah (+78 kg) for women.

Algeria is participating in these African Games with 13 judokas, namely Kais Moudather (-66 kg), Wael Zin (-73 kg), Imad Agilas (-81 kg), Abdelhamid Zmit (-81 kg), Abdallah Fella (-100 kg) and Mohamed Mehdi Lily (+100 kg) for men, Houaria Keddour (-48 kg), Faiza Issahin (-52 kg), Zina Bouakache (-57 kg), Amina Belkadi (-63 kg), Dihia Ben Chellal (-70 kg), Louiza Achallal (-78 kg) and veteran Sonia Asselah (+78 kg), for women.

According to the program disclosed by the organizers, the individual events will take place from March 12 to 14, while the “mixed” team competitions will take place in one day, on March 15.

According to the same source, 211 judokas (118 men and 93 women) representing 35 countries will participate in this continental competition.

Angola is the most represented country with 18 athletes, followed by Egypt (17 judokas) and Tunisia (16 judokas).
