It was thanks to Peter O’Malley, a friend of his and businessman with whom he shares his passion for baseball and whose family previously owned the Los Angeles Dodgers, that Harp Helpu was encouraged to join a consortium in 2012 to acquire the Los Angeles team that at that time then he was only preceded by John Moores.

At that time, Harp Helú spent $80 million to purchase the Padres, in exchange for 10 percent of the franchise’s shares. As a result, the American team has paid more attention to Mexican players, proof of this is their recent signings: Ángel Garza Cantú, Aldo Leija Villarreal and Óliver Carrillo.
