Alekandrova Advances to Face World Number Five Jessica Pegula in Miami Quarterfinals

Alexandrova will now face world number five, the American Jessica Pegula, on Wednesday. The Russian had already reached the quarterfinals in Miami last year.

Especially from the baseline, Alexandrova applied early pressure in her match against Swiatek with precise shots. Her last victory against the Pole was at the 500 tournament in Melbourne in 2021.

“We’ve played against each other a few times and sometimes it went to three sets,” Alexandrova said after the game.

“I think sometimes I was very close, but still far away. Winning against them is of course a great feeling. I don’t know if it’s a surprise or not, but I worked very hard on the pitch and That paid off.”

Swiatek only gets one chance

With the confidence from her victories in the previous rounds over Donna Vekic and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Alexandrova managed a break against Swiatek in the first game. The Russian then never gave up her lead.

Her first serve in particular presented the world number one with serious problems; Swiatek found no answer to Alexandrova’s powerful and precise strokes.

Swiatek only had one break point in the entire match, but Alexandrova was able to fend it off. After 49 minutes, Alexandrova secured the first round and in the end she hit nine winners more than the Pole.

“I just try to go into the court more and hit everything in front of me so that the opponent doesn’t have as much time,” Alexandrova said. “I think when it works it’s very good, but sometimes it doesn’t work. Today it worked.”
