Alcaraz Survives Swarm of Bees to Reach Indian Wells Semifinals, Swiatek Marches On

  • At the ATP tournament in Indian Wells there will be a semi-final between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.
  • The Spanish world number 2 wins clearly against Alexander Zverev (ATP 6), but before that he also has to deal with animal opponents.
  • There are no major surprises in the quarterfinals for the women.

Last year’s winner Carlos Alcaraz survived an onslaught of thousands of bees in Indian Wells and is in the semi-finals after a 6:3, 6:1 win against Alexander Zverev.

Less than ten minutes had been played before the quarter-final game had to be interrupted for almost two hours with the score tied at 1-1 because thousands of bees were buzzing around Center Court. They glued themselves to the TV cameras and also attacked Alcaraz, who was preparing to serve. The Spaniard ran off the pitch in fear, only to later disappear into the dressing room with Zverev.

Dream semi-final against undefeated Sinner

A beekeeper who was called was finally able to collect the bees. When the players returned to the pitch, Alcaraz avoided a third defeat against Zverev in six months. For the 20-year-old defending champion, it was the tenth consecutive victory at the tournament in the California desert.

In the semi-finals, Alcaraz will face Australian Open winner Jannik Sinner (ATP 3), who showed no trouble against Jiri Lehecka (CZE, ATP 32) 6:3, 6:3. «I don’t know how I’ll approach the match. He is the best tennis player in the world at the moment, without a doubt,” said Alcaraz about the Italian, who is two years older and has never lost in 16 games in 2024. Daniil Medvedev (RUS, ATP 4) and Tommy Paul (USA, ATP 17) will contest the other semi-final.

Swiatek with a short appearance – Navarro’s run ended

In the women’s category, Iga Swiatek is marching inexorably towards her second title in Indian Wells. The world number 1, who has not yet lost a single set during the tournament, benefited from the injury-related retirement of her opponent Caroline Wozniacki (WTA 204) at 1-0 in the second round. The Pole won the first set 6:4.

Meanwhile, Coco Gauff (WTA 3) is the only local remaining in the tournament. After the 6:4, 6:3 victory over the Chinese Yue Yuan (WTA 49), she will face Maria Sakkari (WTA 9) in the semifinals. The Greek ended the fairy tale of Gauff’s compatriot Emma Navarro (WTA 23).

The 22-year-old, who had made people sit up and take notice with her victories over Jelina Svitolina and Aryna Sabalenka, finally had to bow down after winning the starting set 7:5, 2:6, 4:6.
