Alba Berlin Women’s Basketball Team Eyes First Title in DBBL Cup

In the top 4 for the DBBL Cup, coach Cristo Cabrera’s team can reach a milestone this weekend.

Less than two years ago, the women of Alba Berlin were promoted to the Women’s Basketball Bundesliga (DBBL), and now the team has their first title.

“Of course we know that a title is at stake, but we can’t think too far ahead,” said the Spaniard. The final tournament will be “very intense because there are two do-or-die games in a short time.”

Berlin, led by German national player Theresa Simon, will face defending champions TK Hannover Luchse in the semi-finals on Saturday in the Stadtgartenhalle (6 p.m.). Before that there will be a duel between hosts Saarlouis Royals and owners Angels Nördlingen (3 p.m.). The final takes place on Sunday (4 p.m./all free on sporttotal.tv).

Alba has good cards, the Berliners finished the DBBL main round in first place and celebrated 15 wins in a row on the way there. The quarter-finals (best of five) will be against Saarlouis from Friday next week (March 22nd).

“The season has gone fantastically so far, especially the last few weeks,” said Cabrera: “Nevertheless, we don’t feel any pressure that we have to prove anything. It’s about us. We try to stick to ourselves and our ideas.” Last year, Alba failed in the semi-finals against eventual champions Rutronik Stars Keltern.
