Alba Berlin Center Suspended for Unsportsmanlike Conduct in Top Game

Berlin (dpa) – Alba Berlin center Khalifa Koumadje has been suspended for one game after being sent off in the top game against the Niners Chemnitz. The 27-year-old was also fined 2,000 euros, as the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) announced on Thursday evening. The factual decision of assault, which the referee team punished with a disqualifying foul last Sunday, was not confirmed by the game management after checking the game photos. However, the behavior of the 2.21 meter tall Koumadje was considered unsportsmanlike.

The center from Chad was involved in a scuffle with Jonas Richter from Chemnitz in the fourth minute of the game. When looking at the video images, the referees recognized an attempted kick. Koumadje recognized his misconduct, but had already become conspicuous for unsportsmanlike behavior during the season, the statement about the punishment said. At the beginning of February he hit his opponent in the face in the game against Göttingen and was banned for four games. He returned to Chemnitz.

Alba’s sports director Himar Ojeda defended his player after the game. “It wasn’t a kick. He wanted to get up, was pushed and his foot just slipped,” said the Spaniard. “Even if he of course reacted wrongly in the end, he is a victim of this development.” Shortly before, Koumadje had been violently attacked several times, but there was no whistle.
