Aiming for Gold: Italy Hosts Double Continental Archery Event in Piedmont Mountains

The double continental archery event of the field and 3D specialties is starting in the Piedmont mountains which hosted the competitions of the Turin 2006 Winter Olympic Games. The Azzurri are aiming for the top of the podium for nations

Italy returns to the center of archery Europe by hosting, for the first time, a double continental exhibition of field and 3D shooting specialties, the fascinating disciplines that are contested along courses immersed in nature, with targets positioned on slopes at known and unknown distances. The theater of the two events will be the meadows and woods of Sansicario and Cesana Torinese, already home to the biathlon competitions at the Turin 2006 Winter Olympic Games. Today the opening ceremony of the European field championship took place at the Olympic Center in Sansicario Alto and from tomorrow we start to get serious with the first official arrows of the event. 196 archers from 26 nations arrived in Piedmont with Italy, a true superpower in this discipline as demonstrated by the latest championships and victories at the World Games, which will take to the field with 24 athletes. The Italian group will be the largest, followed by the delegation from Great Britain with 17 archers and from France with 14.

THE AZZURRI IN THE COMPETITION

The technical director Giorgio Botto, assisted by the coaches Daniele Bellotti and Antonio Tosco, has called up the defending champion Massimiliano Mandia (Fiamme Azzurre) and the Air Force couple Marco Morello and Federico Musolesi, as well as Sara Noceti (Arcieri Tigullio), in the recurve. the world champion and winner of the World Games Chiara Rebagliati and the junior world champion Aiko Rolando, both from Fiamme Oro. Among the juniors there is space for Matteo Borsani (Arcieri del Roccolo) and the junior world vice champion Roberta Di Francesco (Arcieri Abruzzesi). In the compound the choice fell on Marco Bruno (Fiamme Azzurre), Fabio Ibba (Arcieri Del Torrazzo), Michea Godano (Arcieri Tigullio) who won the junior continental title in the last edition, Francesca Aloisi (Iuvenilia), Irene Franchini (Fiamme Azzurre ) and the reigning champion Sara Ret (Arcieri Cormons). In the junior class, Fabrizio Aloisi (Iuvenilia) and Martina Del Duca (Arcieri Uras) are called up. In the competition there will also be the naked bow division with Eric Esposito (Arcieri di Malpaga Bartolomeo Colleoni Bergamo), Giuseppe Seimandi (Fiamme Azzurre), Luca Stelluto (Arcieri Club Napoli), Livia Fabris (Arcieri Orione), Giulia Mantilli (Arcieri Romani) and the world champion Cinzia Noziglia (Fiamme Oro), named by World Archery the best athlete in the world of this division in 2022. Among the juniors there will be the reigning European champion Matteo Seghetta (Arcieri Barbacane Città della Pieve) and Rania Braccini (Compagnia Archers Lucca). The quality of Italy in this specialty is demonstrated by the countless titles won by the Azzurri. Suffice it to say that in the last continental event held in Porec, Croatia, in 2021, the Azzurri won the medal table by nations with 13 golds, 6 silvers and 7 bronzes, including individual, team and mixed team podiums. It goes without saying that, playing at home, the expectations are very high. But this week’s matches will decide whether the Italian national team will be able to confirm the good things achieved in previous international events.

THE PROGRAM

Tomorrow and Wednesday the competitions begin with the archers engaged on the qualification courses: 24 targets at an unknown distance on Monday and 24 targets at a known distance on Tuesday. From Thursday we will get to the heart of the matter with the awarding of the first medals: the junior bronzes will be awarded at the end of a day dedicated to individual preliminaries; On Friday the preliminaries and finals for teams and mixed teams will take place, while Saturday ends with the assignment of the individual European titles. The challenges will be broadcast live on the World Archery Europe YouTube channel, while a summary of the podium matches will be broadcast on Raisport. At the end of the first continental event, some Italian athletes and several opponents from other national teams will remain in Sansicario to compete in the 3D European championship immediately afterwards. But first we need to close this appointment in the best possible way…
