After the 0-3 defeat to Fulhan, Tottenham boss: We are not aiming for fourth place

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou does not see fourth place in the English Premier League as a reward following their 3-0 defeat to London rivals Fulham, Sunday (17/3/2024). Earlier, thanks to a 4-0 win over Aston Villa, Spurs closed the gap on the Lions to just two points with one game remaining, leaving the fate of the top four in their hands.

Should Tottenham win at Craven Cottage on Sunday (17/3/2024), they will climb into the Champions League places for at least a few hours before Unai Emery’s side return to action against West Ham United. However, the Lilywhites were lethargic at home to their London rivals, where in-form Cottagers striker Rodrigo Muniz scored twice either side of Sasa Lukic’s first goal for Fulham in a three-goal defeat.

The defeat marked the first time Tottenham had failed to score in an English Premier League match under Postecoglou, ending their incredible goalscoring streak in 39 games in English football’s top flight.

As a result, Villa is now back in the lead for fourth place, but Postecoglou reiterated that he is not aiming for fourth position, according to him the most important thing is significant development in his squad.

“I don’t see fourth place as a reward. This club has finished fourth before. This club has finished second before. You can do anything, having reached the Champions League final, you can do anything except this club has achieved a lot p. So fourth place is not my final goal,” said Postecoglou as quoted from SportsmoleAhad (17/3/2024).

He emphasized that he does not expect to finish fourth if Spurs have not grown and developed as a team. “Fourth place would be great if I felt we were developing as a team and we were creating something that would bring us success next year. But fourth place is not our goal. It hasn’t happened yet. That’s not my goal,” he said.
