Adrian Mannarino’s Frustrating Defeat at the Miami Masters 1000 to Yannick Hanfmann

Difficult to find more frustrating for Adrian Mannarino than his defeat in the second round, Sunday, against the German Yannick Hanfmann, at the Masters 1000 in Miami (3-6, 7-6 (1), 6-4). The Frenchman indeed had all the cards in his hands to win in two sets. But his lack of efficiency during the second round pushed him into a tricky final set, from which he was unable to escape.

Facing the 56th in the world, “Manna” (seeded 19) had completely mastered the first act, during which he drove his opponent crazy with his tense and low strikes, his variations of rhythm and his left-handed serve. Two breaks logically gave him the first set (6-3).

But this efficiency subsequently declined. During the second set, never worried about his commitment, he actually obtained six break points, all missed, including a match point at 5-4, 30-40, which he wasted by hitting a backhand too long. He then completely redacted his tie-break, losing 7 points to 1, by making unforced errors.

An injury to his left foot led to fears of an abandonment at 1 all in the third set, but Mannarino resumed the match after the intervention of the physiotherapist. Trailing 1-4, he managed to courageously regain his break from behind (4-4). But he stalled by offering a match point to his rival by hitting a forehand. Hanfmann converted it by releasing a winning backhand cross. In 2h43, Mannarino had only won three break points out of thirteen.
