A Look at the Top Players and Favorites for the 2024 MLB Season

The 2024 Major League Baseball (MLB) season is already on the calendar; The Opening Day will be Thursday, March 28. In this edition, the Texas Rangers will defend the title they won last year after defeating the Arizona Diamondbacks in the World Series.

Currently, talent abounds in the Major League, both in the ninth contenders for the title and in those that are only contenders for the postseason. There are players with a lot of potential, already established, and others with a spectacular past, but with an uncertain future (either due to injuries or a decline in play).

In order not to make an endless list, in this text we will analyze five renowned baseball players, who have enviable careers: Shohei Ohtani (Los Angeles Dodgers), Ronald Acuña Jr. (Atlanta Braves), Mookie Betts (Los Angeles Dodgers), Corey Seager (Texas Rangers) and Mike Trout (Los Angeles Angels).

Shohei Ohtani

The 29-year-old Japanese is the highest-paid player in the history of the Major Leagues; In December 2023, the Los Angeles Dodgers gave him a 10-year, $700 million contract. In addition, he is the only player to win two MVPs (Most Valuable Player) unanimously (2021 and 2023).

Shohei Ohtani registers 34.7 WAR (Wins Above Replacement, for its acronym in English), which includes batter and pitcher statistics: 681 hits (171 home runs and 129 doubles), 86 steals, 437 runs batted in and 428 runs scored in two thousand 483 shifts. His record is 38-19, with a 3.01 ERA.

However, he has not seen action on the diamond since September due to an elbow injury (he had surgery a month later). Due to the above, in his first year with the Dodgers he will not be able to be a pitcher.

Mike Trout

‘Captain America’ is one of the best baseball players of the last two decades. In his showcase there are three MVPs: 2014, 2016 and 2019; Furthermore, in four years he was second in the voting (2012, 2013, 2015 and 2018). Prior to Ohtani’s aforementioned contract, he was the highest-paid player in the Major League: in 2019 he signed a contract with the Los Angeles Angels for 12 years and $426.5 million.

Mike Trout’s historical statistics list 1,489 commitments with 5,402 at-bats, 1,106 runs, 1,624 hits, 3,142 bases, 368 home runs, 310 doubles, 52 triples and 940 RBIs. His batting average is .301.

However, constant injuries have affected the career of ‘Captain America’ (in 2023 he only played 82 games), so it is expected that in the new season he will recover the level that led him to glory.

Ronald Acuña Jr.

The 26-year-old Venezuelan was chosen as MVP of the National League in 2023; It is his first award, which he obtained unanimously, like the Japanese Shohei Ohtani. Ronald Acuña is considered the best right fielder in the Atlanta Braves and in the Major Leagues.

Last season was historic for the South American: he became the first player to record more than 40 home runs and 70 steals in the same campaign. He also ranked as the leader in hits (217), on-base percentage (.416) and runs scored (149).

Injuries have spared Acuña Jr., because in 2023 he registered 159 games. It should be remembered that in 2021 he suffered a tear in the anterior cruciate ligament of his right knee (that year he played 82 games).

Mookie Betts

The Dodgers second baseman has an enviable record: Most Valuable Player and batting leader of the American League in 2018, six Gold Glove awards, six times Silver Slugger, seven times All Star and two World Series played (in a champion ).

The 2023 season was Mookie Betts’ best since 2018, posting a .987 OPS, .306 batting average, hitting 39 home runs, making 179 hits, and making 107 RBIs. He is already 31 years old, however, since 2021 he has played at least 120 games per year.

Corey Seager

The Texas Rangers championship would not have been possible without Corey Seager. MLB 2023 was the best offensive campaign for this player: he led the American League with 42 doubles, 33 home runs (he tied his 2022 total in 116 fewer at-bats) and hit .327 / .390 / .623. He was the runner-up in the MVP voting.

The American’s spectacular campaign was marred by a hamstring and thumb injury, which is why he only participated in 119 games (he missed a quarter of a year). Corey is considered the best shortstop in the Major Leagues, despite his constant injuries.

Favorites to win MLB 2024

The Texas Rangers had a great postseason in 2023, because the road to the World Series began from the wild card games. The same scenario applied to the Arizona Diamondbacks, although they only won one game in the Major League Baseball finals.

However, neither the Rangers nor the Diamondbacks are among the ninth favorites to win MLB 2024. Betting lines have the Los Angeles Dodgers as the team most likely to win the Major League title. In second place are the Atlanta Braves and then are the New York Yankees.
