70 Years of Success: The Story of Judo Club 56 in Vannes

  • 1 1954, the beginning of a story

  • Hajime! To talk about the most successful Morbihan judo club, we have to go back in time a little… 70 years. In 1954, Pierre Pautler, originally from eastern France, black belt in judo and karate, arrived in Vannes and created his club. “My father was a visionary,” says Frédéric Pautler, current director of the club. He was an excellent teacher.” He becomes the first 6th dan of the department, understand one of the highest rankings in the discipline.

“At the time, it was the “Morbihannais Judo Club,” explains Frédéric. My father taught judo in several towns in the department, and that’s why he wanted to create a group to raise the level of the students. Under this impetus, the name Judo Club 56 was born in 1989. Vannes, Plescop, Theix, but also Belle-Île or Locminé: in all, the club is present in twelve towns in the department, and today licenses 650 judokas .

  • 2 Discipline

  • Judo is a good school of life” says Frédéric who took over his father’s dojo. From the height of his thousands of hours of lessons and his red and white belt, the strongest, that of the 7th dan, the judoka is proud of this sporting heritage. To persist on the tatami, judo requires a certain discipline. “It’s a complete sport,” says Frédéric. It requires endurance, resistance and strength.” Rigor therefore, but good humor: “The atmosphere is family, friendly, people come above all to find well-being,” adds the judoka.

  • 3 Traditions

  • In a corner of the dojo, the moral code of judo is displayed: “Politeness, courage, friendship, self-control, sincerity, modesty, honor, respect”. A list bringing traditions into the spirit of the times. “Our teachers enforce the rules of martial arts, no handshakes or kisses, here the greeting is obligatory, we follow tradition,” explains Christian Mouttou, teacher and 7th dan. At the entrance to the tatami, a wooden sculpture of a torii, a traditional Japanese gate, would make the dojo almost solemn.

  • 4 A collection of trophies

  • In 70 years of salutes and fights, the shelves of the dojo are loaded with cups and trophies of all sizes. “We had to throw away a lot,” confides Frédéric. Over the years, they unscrew and break under the vibrations of the tatami! » Recently, the senior men’s first division team won the Brittany championship. The cup placed at the entrance to the dojo is as great as the pride it represents for the trainers. “We are a unique team with three 6th dan teachers and three others from 7th dan,” says Frédéric. I am not aware of a French club that is in this configuration! »

The latest, the nugget of coaches, “Yannis Klelly-Grousset, a 16-year-old who has just participated in his first European Cup! », rejoices Frédéric. This Saturday, March 30, the club is organizing a show at the Palais des arts in Vannes. “It will be a show without combat,” reveals the director.
