(Marco Calabresi) In Miami the sun still can’t be seen, but at least the rain has given us a break. Jannik Sinner, perhaps worried about having to return to the locker room again due to the bad weather (and with him Darren Cahill, caught by the cameras personally drying the courts), understood that he had to accelerate to complete his debut match in the second Masters 1000 of the year. Andrea Vavassori, in the Italian derby between finalists in Melbourne (one in singles, won, and one in doubles, lost), helped him with the first two points after the stop of almost 24 hours: he first put a volley into the net forehand, then a backhand back (but for the rest of the match he played it), giving Jannik the break that decided the first set.
And the second one also went by quickly (break to zero in the fifth game), with Sinner finishing 6-3 6-4 in the run-in phase in a tournament in which he has already reached the final twice, in the last two odd years : in the third round there will be the Dutch Tallon Griekspoor, against whom the world number 3 has won three times out of three, in the last two editions of the Rotterdam tournament (always in the semi-finals) and in the Davis quarterfinals in Malaga, in a draw increasingly poor in seeding. In the lower part, that of Jannik, after Rublev Tsitsipas, Tiafoe and Paul also missed out, the latter injured.
It is essential to win the next matches (in the round of 16 there would be Damm or O’Connell) possibly in two sets and keep energy for the final rush. «Yesterday I didn’t feel great, while today I’m quite happy – Sinner’s words -. Andrea is a player you never know what to expect from, so I had to be very careful. I played the service rounds well, waiting for the moment to make the break.”
To say that Sinner played his service rounds well is an understatement, given that he finished with a percentage of points won with his first serve of 92%, despite «Wave» shooting more winners, 18 to 17.
