The national players boycotted the winners’ banquet when we won the 1974 World Cup because the DFB officials locked out their players’ wives. Exactly 50 years later the next scandal occurs…

BILD learned: The World Cup heroes are upset because the DFB didn’t organize anything to mark the 50th anniversary of the title win in the final against the Netherlands (2-1). They don’t feel their merits are appreciated. Now they are holding their own celebration in Munich on July 7th. Current DFB officials are expressly not invited.

The celebration should therefore be organized by Uli Hoeneß (72). What further upset the 1974 world champions: The DFB invited the 74 team to the international match against Holland in Frankfurt on Tuesday at very short notice. Players like Paul Breitner (currently in Dubai) and Sepp Maier (currently in South Tyrol) had already booked holidays there. For many, this gesture simply came too late.

Sepp Maier (80) to BILD: “If the DFB does not find it necessary to honor its world champions, then we can organize such a celebration ourselves. The association can then save itself an invitation to an international match like next Tuesday. I think we deserve our own anniversary celebration. Now we’ll just do it ourselves.”

The Gladbach world champions Berti Vogts (77), Rainer Bonhof (71) and Wolfgang Kleff (77) will accept the DFB invitation to the Holland international match. According to BILD information, Bonhof, who was promoted to president at Borussia last week, wants to seek contact with DFB President Bernd Neuendorf (62) in Frankfurt and mediate again in the dispute with the world champions. Many of the ’74 world champions had already discussed the lack of an anniversary celebration at the Beckenbauer memorial service in the Allianz Arena.

Berti Vogts to BILD: “I’m not sad, I’m disappointed in the DFB. When you see the funerals for the last time, you should think about how deserving national players of the past are treated.”

After the death of 74 captain Franz Beckenbauer (78), Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (68) harshly criticized the DFB and condemned its behavior towards the legend in connection with the Summer Fairy Tale affair. Speaking to BILD, Rummenigge accused the DFB of adding fuel to the fire. Rummenigge: “Especially from a person whose name I will never mention again.” Apparently he was referring to ex-DFB President Theo Zwanziger (78).

World Cup final scorer Andreas Brehme (63), who died unexpectedly on February 24th, had repeatedly complained about the DFB’s treatment of ex-players, especially when it came to the allocation of tickets.

Vogts had similar experiences with the association. When the ex-national coach asked for an additional ticket for his son for the international match against Italy in Gladbach in June 2022 (5:2), the DFB refused it. Vogts then sent his honorary card back in protest. Vogts is the last national coach to become European champions with Germany in 1996. However, the DFB did not offer him any tickets for the home European Championship, said Vogts. That’s why Vogts, who also coached the Scots who will play the opening game against Germany on June 14th, now has other plans for the start of the European Championship.

Vogts: “We are currently organizing our own European Championship celebration for the 96 generation with Europapark Rust. We want to spend three wonderful days together before the opening game. The players from back then are warmly invited along with their wives and children.”

The 74 title generation is not the only one who is angry about the way the DFB is dealing.
