In an interview, sports director Jürgen Luginger talks about 1. FC Saarbrücken’s incredible cup series, the dream of the European Cup – and why the duel in the semi-finals will be even more attractive.

Mr. Luginger, after the 2-1 win against Gladbach, 1. FC Saarbrücken is in the semi-finals of the DFB Cup as a third division club – in 2020 it even achieved this as a regional league club. What is that between the club and the cup?

This cannot be explained exactly. We have a special relationship with the cup and want to achieve something there every year. It is extraordinary for us to reach the semi-finals twice in such a short space of time. This season the opponents were something special: Karlsruher SC, Bayern Munich, Eintracht Frankfurt, then Mönchengladbach. You have to let that melt in your mouth.
