Würzburg Baskets Aim to Continue Winning Streak in Carnival Frankenderby Against Bamberg Baskets

After the defeat in Braunschweig, the Würzburg Baskets want to get back on the road to success and extend their winning streak in their own hall. On Friday at 8 p.m. the Bamberg Baskets will be guests at the “Carnival Frankenderby” in the “tectake Arena”, which has been completely sold out for several days and want to take revenge for the defeat in the first leg on December 27th. The game on matchday 20 of the Basketball Bundesliga is the 200th BBL game for Baskets captain Felix Hoffmann. The broadcast for subscribers on dyn.sport begins at 7:45 p.m.

“When I was brought into the BBL team by Doug Spradley from the training squad eight years ago, I could never have imagined or thought it possible that I would take on the role of captain and play 200 Bundesliga games. I’ve said many times how proud I am to have this role in my hometown. It’s crazy that there are now 200 games. The fact that it happened against Bamberg of all places is a little bit of extra motivation,” says the “Würzburg Warrior”: “200 might not sound like that much, but I only played my first BBL game when I was 26 years old.

What really matters

The canceled Corona season was also there, and in the last few years I’ve had to repeatedly struggle with injuries, otherwise I would probably already be at 250. It’s a small milestone, but a home win against Bamberg is of course much more important. Our goal for the season is the playoffs and we want to establish ourselves in the top third of the table. That’s why individual things take a back seat on Friday. I’m looking forward to the game and hope we stay on track for the playoffs.”

Bamberg is also the opponent against whom the 34-year-old Baskets captain has played the most games: 15 in the BBL and two in the BBL Cup. During his term in office, all six victories that the Würzburg Baskets have so far celebrated in 28 matches against the previously overpowering Lower Franconia were achieved.

The first was on the first matchday of the 2017/2018 season, the last was in the first leg on December 27th, when the Würzburg Baskets with eight available players in the Bamberg “Brose Arena” ended a game that had already been thought lost with a 19-0 run last seven minutes into an 83:78 victory. The Lower Franconians have won four of the last six games against the Upper Franconians, although the last home game went to Bamberg 79:73.

The BBL’s top scorer and fourth-best points collector is shooting guard Zach Copeland (18.2 points/40 percent three-point rate), who almost always comes off the bench for the Bamberg Baskets and who the Würzburg Baskets had well under control in the first leg (nine points).

Playmaker Trey Woodbury (14.2 points) and power forward Adrian Nelson (12.5 points/6.4 rebounds) also regularly score in double figures. Together with center Filip Stanic, who moved from Lower Franconia to Upper Franconia in the summer, he scored 9.9 points75. 8 rebounds) forms a strong duo under the boards.

Bamberg’s veteran Karsten Tadda, who played in the ProB together with Felix Hoffmann at TSV Breitengüßbach when he was younger, played his 600th Bundesliga game in Bamberg’s 108:78 home win against Syntainics MBC – only the BBL record player and head coach has more VR-Bank Würzburg Baskets Academy, Alex King (638).

In keeping with the Frankenderby at the start of the carnival weekend, the first 100 costumed fans will receive a carnival doughnut. All fans will have the opportunity to have a genuine Zac Seljaas brand “mullet” cut free of charge by hairdressers, and after the game a derby victory can hopefully be celebrated in the upper foyer with music and drinks.
