Wimpassingen Judo Club Shines at Austrian Championships: Young Fighters Putting in Strong Performance

The Olympic Games in Paris are the big goal of the Wimpassingen top fighters this year. Eight young judokas proved that the club from the Schwarzatal doesn’t have to worry about the next generation at the Austrian championship for the U18 and U23 age groups in Bischofshofen .

Head coach Adi Zeltner traveled to the national title fights with a very young team: “The young people definitely need this time and time again to measure themselves against the next oldest, also to feel where the journey can and should go,” explains Zeltner, who won two silver medals and three bronze medals and four other top seven results. The Wimpassinger results at a glance:

Christoph Vakil (U18, -50 kilograms). Last year’s Austrian champion won all of his preliminary round fights with Ippon. However, there was a defeat in the final. Silver is the 15-year-old’s fourth ÖM medal.

Hozan Arslan (U18, -66 Kilograms). The three-time Austrian champion confidently qualified for the final with four wins. Instead of gold, however, he suffered a painful thigh injury that put him out of the race for the near future, so silver was little consolation for the 16-year-old.

Christian Greiner (U18, -81 kilograms). He only suffered one defeat against the eventual winner during the tournament. He won all other fights clearly and early with Ippon. The reward at the end of the tournament was the bronze medal.

Niklas Waitzbauer (U23, -90 kilograms). The 18-year-old fought his way to third place with three wins.

Oliver Scharner (U23, +100 kilograms). The 17-year-old won two fights and took bronze.

The 14-year-old also provided a talent test Thomas Seiser (-60 kilograms). He finished seventh in the U18 class, as well Askil Brunner in the class up to 66 kilos. In addition to bronze in the U18 Greiner also seventh in the U23. Erik Grabner (-73 kilograms) came seventh in the U18 and ninth in the U23.
