Do you want to clean your Chucks in the washing machine? We’ll show you what you should pay attention to.
The shoe manufacturer Converse recommends on its website not to wash Chucks in the washing machine, but to clean them by hand with a damp cloth and mild soap. However, there are a number of examples on the Internet of Chucks wearers who wash their shoes in the washing machine – and do so regularly (see here, for example). So in principle it is possible. But at your own risk. If you want to try it, follow these steps.
Wash Converse shoes in the washing machine
- Before you put the Chucks in the washing machine, first take out the laces. These can be washed in a laundry net or a pillowcase.
- Add one to three towels to the shoes to prevent constant collisions with the drum. This protects the material.
- When washing the Chucks, choose a gentle cycle with a low temperature (30°C or less) and a low spin speed if possible to avoid the risk of damage to the shoe.
- For white Chucks, you can also add a little bleach to make the white shine brighter again.
- Then let the Chucks air dry. Do not put them in the dryer or place them directly on the heater. This could make the rubber porous, loosen the adhesive, or cause other damage.

Alternative: Wash Chucks by hand
If you don’t like the idea of using the washing machine, you can of course also wash the Chucks by hand. The best way to do this is to take out the shoelaces and wash them in a laundry net or a pillowcase in the washing machine. Meanwhile, you can remove stains and dirt from the Chucks using a damp cloth, dishwashing liquid and, if necessary, a toothbrush. Optionally, you can also use a special shoe cleaner foam (Order on Amazon / ADVERT). Then let the Chucks dry thoroughly before putting them back on.
