Tim Walter and Hamburger SV – that is a special relationship. A week and a half after the breakup, the coach says goodbye and shows a remarkable attitude. His successor praises the team’s fitness.

Former HSV coach Tim Walter once again addressed the fans and members of the Hamburg second division soccer team with emotional words. “It breaks my heart that I have to say goodbye to all of you this way,” wrote the 48-year-old in a message in the official club magazine “HSVlive,” which was published on Friday.

Walter was released from Hamburger SV a week and a half ago. On Sunday, his successor Steffen Baumgart will make his debut as HSV coach.

For two and a half years, his entire ambition was “to get promoted to the first league together with you. “I gave everything for this every day,” Walter wrote. The fact that they didn’t make it together makes him very sad – “and, given some of the events, also angry.”

He alluded to central defender Mario Vuskovic’s doping ban and the last game of last season, when Hamburg celebrated promotion after the game at SV Sandhausen. In the end, 1. FC Heidenheim intercepted them.

Nevertheless, gratitude “to have been part of and co-creator of such a great club” prevails, said Walter. “Even in the worst defeats, we always stuck together, supported each other, built each other up and carried on.” For that he wanted to “say THANK YOU, especially to my players and my entire team of trainers, doctors and therapists. It was a great joy and honor to be with you every day!”

In his thanks, he also included sports director Jonas Boldt and sports director Claus Costa: “You have always been a great source of support for me.” His message ends with the words: “THANK YOU to each and every one of these fantastic FANS who have gone through the heights TOGETHER with us and depths and have often carried us a bit. – YOU ARE 1st LEAGUE!”

The club parted ways with Walter after two 3-4 home defeats against Karlsruher SC and Hannover 96. Above all, he was unable to solve the team’s defensive problems. His assistant Merlin Polzin (33) looked after the team in the 2-2 draw at Hansa Rostock last time. Baumgart was hired as the new coach on Monday. The 52-year-old will make his debut on Sunday (1.30 p.m./Sky) against SV Elversberg.

At a press conference on Friday, Baumgart praised the team’s fitness level. Captain and central defender Sebastian Schonlau is considered a key player in Baumgart’s plans. Both were promoted from the 3rd to the 1st league together with SC Paderborn. “He is a leading player, you can see that in every moment,” praised Baumgart.

The only question that remains is whether Stephan Ambrosius or Dennis Hadzikadunic will be called up alongside defense chief Schonlau against Elversberg. According to Baumgart, both could fill it and perform well. There doesn’t seem to be a decision yet. First the new soccer teacher wants to talk to both of them. He feels similarly about the question of whether Matheo Raab or Daniel Heuer Fernandes is in goal. In the last two games, Raab had replaced the previous goalkeeper.

Baumgart may have to do without offensive player Jean-Luc Dompé. “We have to wait and see whether he gets fit,” said the coach about the personnel situation. According to Baumgart, he feels a mixture of anticipation and some excitement. “It’s not a peaceful sleep now,” he said. “An actor would say he has stage fright.”
