VfL Wolfsburg Managing Director Denies Speculation About Niko Kovac’s Successor

Wolfsburg (dpa) – Managing director Marcel Schäfer from VfL Wolfsburg has rejected speculation about successor candidates for the criticized coach Niko Kovac. “I see that as great disrespect,” said the ex-professional after the 2-2 draw against TSG Hoffenheim on Sunday. The 39-year-old made it clear: Kovac remains the coach of the eleventh-placed team in the Bundesliga.

Among other things, there were reports that VfL was interested in St. Pauli’s coach Fabian Hürzeler and that there had already been discussions. Schäfer denied this and found that the reports were “disrespectful towards FC St. Pauli too,” “because they also have a big task and want to get promoted,” he added about the leaders of the 2nd league.

Hürzeler said at the weekend that the reports had “extremely irritated and extremely annoyed” him. “I definitely haven’t met with any other club. My first point of contact is FC St. Pauli.”

Several coaching candidates were linked to VfL. Schäfer also denied this. “I then found out that I had spoken to a lot of coaches even though I was in Wolfsburg,” he says. The plan is to end the season with Kovac.
