A group of kidsfilmed by a video surveillance camera, has shouted and spray-painted homophobic phrases in front of the entrance to Gay center, a space founded by various associations from the LGBT+ world in the Testaccio district of Rome. The vandals also damaged men and baseball the rainbow colored wall at the entrance to the centre. “This is yet another act by very young people who also became protagonists of raids on our headquarters, threats and insults to volunteers and users. Attacks that have clear indicators of homolesbobitransphobic hatred, act in the pack. A method that we now recognize more and more frequently in the streets of our country” denounces the Gay center in a post on social media. According to the center’s volunteers, episodes like this are the “result of a public discourse that incites more and more to hate towards those who continue to be labeled as “different“and therefore a target of violence.”
In addition to asking for the writings to be removed, the associations are launching an appeal to the Minister of Education, the Northern League member Giuseppe Valditara: “We ask you to invest in courses against discrimination towards LGBT+ people, so that these behaviors can be prevented and every place of protection for LGBT+ people can continue to be a safe space for participation”. The Democratic Party group in the Capitoline Assembly (Rome’s city council) condemns the incident, speaking of “shameful images, unacceptable behavior which reveal how the dangers of discrimination are more current and widespread than we think. We hope that the perpetrators of these gestures will be identified. Today our solidarity goes to the activists of the Gay Center and to the entire LGBTQ+ community” write the group leader Valeria Baglio and the counselor Yuri Trombetti.
