University of the Philippines students stage annual nude run to protest proposed constitutional reform

Student fraternities at the University of the Philippines in Manila staged an annual nude run on campus on Friday to protest against proposed constitutional reform in the Philippines.

About a dozen members of the Alpha Phi Omega fraternity took part in the naked run. They only wore hoods and masks.

The first “Oblation Run” took place back in 1977 and was named after an iconic symbol of the university – a naked man with his arms outstretched, symbolizing his selfless devotion to the nation. At that time the aim was to draw attention to the film “Naked Hero”. The film is about oppressed plantation workers.

Rumors of bribery of officials

“This year our motto is ‘No to constitutional changes,'” said Yusof Babate, a member of Alpha Phi Omega fraternity.

Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte is alleging that allies of his successor “Bongbong” Romualdez Marcos Jr. are planning to amend the constitution to remove presidential term limits.

Members of the House of Representatives have discussed amending the constitution. Without providing evidence, Duterte claimed that those lawmakers who support Marcos were bribing local officials to amend the 1987 constitution and allow the current president to remain in power longer.

Among the current president’s supporters is his press secretary Martin Romualdez, who is also his cousin, denies such a plan. He only wants to change the constitution to lift restrictions on foreign investment.

Marcos has said he is open to more foreign investment but opposes some constitutional changes related to the economy. Restrictions will continue to apply to foreigners who want to buy land and property in the Philippines or invest in media companies.

In the Philippines, the president can only be elected for a single six-year term.
