Uncertainty Surrounding OG Anunoby’s Injury and Return to the Court Creates Challenges for the Knicks

Uncertainty continues around OG Anunoby, who underwent surgery at the beginning of February and the Knicks have not yet provided an expected date for his possible return to the court.

The forward with a British passport felt that something was not going well in the warm-up session of the clash against Charlotte Hornets on January 29, and finally that night he decided not to play because he was not in full fitness.

And since then there has been absolute secrecy on the part of New Yorkers, and when the three weeks of his supposed recovery are about to expire, there is no news about his status. Identical cases as Mitchell Robinson and his ankle fracture, and the shoulder of Julius Randle, who recently acknowledged “not ruling out” surgery if he was not one hundred percent.

Anunoby in particular is risking his sporting future, with a ‘player option’ for the next campaign of 19.28 million, and which he will surely not execute. The Knicks, for their part, need him. Many injured, Anunoby is key in defense, and they fight to qualify directly for the playoffs.

The New Yorkers have fallen in 4 consecutive days and in five of the last six that they have played with their plague of injuries. In their last match they only had six first team players plus Taj Gibson who (for now) has not had his temporary agreement renewed, making a possible return of Nerlens Noel, currently without a team, sound strongly.

For their part, Isaiah Hartenstein, Donte DiVincenzo and Bojan Bogdanovic recently returned to training and are expected for the next game against the Sixers without Joel Embiid. A good opportunity to end their bad streak after the break of the All-Star Weekend 2024.

Before being injured, Anunoby averaged 15.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 39% in triples in 35 minutes per day.
