Ugo Humbert wins in three sets over Gaël Monfils in the first round in Dubai

Beaten five days ago (6-2, 6-4) by Gaël Monfils in the quarter-finals in Doha, Ugo Humbert took his revenge this Tuesday on his elder brother. The 18th in the world won in three sets (4-6, 6-3, 6-3) against a Monfils on alternating current, in the first round of the ATP 500 in Dubai.

However, it was the latter who won the first set, despite only 55% of first balls. But the 54th in the world was able to convert his only break point, at 4-3, after saving three in the previous game. However, just after taking the first round, Monfils complained to his staff of stomach aches, caused according to him by the eggs eaten the same morning. At 6-4, 0-1, he even had to go to the locker room after indicating his desire to vomit.

Monfils too handicapped by his stomach

Certainly bothered by these stomach aches, Monfils alternated the good and the less good during the second round, seeking to quickly end the exchanges, sometimes with success, sometimes without. Opposite, Ugo Humbert raised his level of play, breaking at 3-2, after putting a little more into each shot, and took the second set a few moments later, with a shutout. More precise, more regular than Monfils on the sleeve, it logically stuck together.

The third round followed more or less the same logic, Monfils, still diminished, no longer seemed able to physically hold on to the rally and no longer moved at all on the court. Except for several defenses, as surprising as they were spectacular, like at 1-2, 40-40, with a superb point concluded at the net.

But, faced with the wiper proposed by Humbert, he was no longer able to compete, having already failed from the start by giving in his throw. Humbert ended up winning, after 2h9′. He will face Andy Murray in the next round, who defeated Denis Shapovalov for his entry into the tournament.
