The winter session of the 2024 transfer market has closed, now it’s time to take stock to understand which teams have strengthened the most, at least on paper. Here’s the situation, one by one.
Atalanta
No major movements were expected, and so it was. Gasperini was fine with the Goddess as it is, the only request made by the coach was Hien, and the defender of the Swedish national team arrived promptly from Verona. Outgoing via Zortea, went to Frosinone.
Bologna
Also in this session the focus was on talented young people, and this explains the arrivals of Castro, who is now playing the South American pre-Olympic with Argentina, M. Ilic and Karlsson. Zirkzee needed a backup up front and the 24-year-old Danish Odgaard arrived from Dutch Az. He had asked Bonifazi to leave, and was satisfied with the transfer to Frosinone.
Cagliari
He worked mainly on the exit, selling Capradossi, Pereira and Goldaniga. A reinforcement was needed for the defense, and from Fiorentina, where he played little or nothing, the Colombian Yerry Mina arrived, who in Sardinia will try to make up for his declining years. The last-minute coup was Gaetano, loaned from Napoli, who ensures quality.
Empoli
Zurkowski’s return from Spezia has already borne fruit, read goals and assists. But for a team that needs to save itself, the sale of a talent like Baldanzi is hard to explain, unless the new coach Davide Nicola deemed him incompatible with his 4-3-3. Up front it was deemed necessary to make some additions and Cerri and Niang arrived. Only the field will tell if the situation has improved.
Fiorentina
Two entries for Viola, but significant. They are those of Faraoni, already integrated into the Italian maneuver, and of ‘Gallo’ Belotti, eager to find the space he didn’t have at Roma to play for the chance of going to the European Championships. Pierozzi, who needed to play to gain experience, was loaned to Salernitana while Brekalo’s return to Croatia was a given and so it was.
Frosinone
As always, Ciociaria sporting director Guido Angelozzi stood out for his great activism. Here then is the usual ‘circular’ of entries and exits that gave Eusebio Di Francesco five players who were theoretically ready, namely Bonifazi, Valeri, Zortea, Demba Seck and that Ghedjemis, a 21-year-old French-Algerian who had already been put together in January , three appearances.
Genoa
The 25 million received from Tottenham for Dragusin were the real coup for Genoa who then, despite selling (all on loan) Jegiello to Spezia, Puscas to Bari and Kutlu to Galatasaray, worked on the entry by taking the various Vitinha, Stolz, Cittadini and Bohinen. However, Pellegri’s return to the rossoblù fell through, while Fiorentina’s offers for Gudmundsson were never taken into consideration.
Inter
It moved immediately, taking Buchanan, while Franco Carboni returned from Mozna and was then transferred to Ternana. Agoume, who had no space, went on loan to Sevilla, the same as Sensi to Maresca’s Leicester.
Juventus
That of Djalò, taken permanently from Lille, could be a great coup, if the defender regains full physical integrity, while it is not clear how it is possible that the right of redemption of Alcaraz (now arrived from Southampton on a costly loan to 3.7 million) has been set at 49 million given that until yesterday the market valuation of the Argentine was around 15 million.
Lazio
As per tradition, Lazio’s winter transfer market was non-existent, there was only the transfer of Basic to Salernitana.
Lecce
The sale of Strefezza to the ambitious Como was hard for the fans to digest, while Faticanti, who arrived last summer from Roma with the label of ‘new De Rossi’, never played and was transferred to Ternana. Two defenders taken, Enes Yilmaz and Pierotti.
Milan
The return of Gabbia from Spain and the purchase of Terracciano from the Hellas Verona supermarket were the incoming movements, while outgoing Romero went to Almeria, Maldini jr (returned from Empoli) to Monza and Krunic, as he had been asking for some time, at Fenerbahce. The Argentine international Pellegrino, who went on loan to Salernitana, has failed, at least for now.
Monza
Djuric, Daniel Maldini and Zerbin on paper are three good shots for this team whose real secret is coach Palladino. Via Maric, moved to Rijeka.
Napoli
President De Laurentiis, aware of the mistakes made in the summer, had promised reinforcements and kept his word, even if he missed the two primary objectives, namely Dragusin and Samardzic. Thus arrived the various Ngonge, Mazzocchi, Traoré and Dendoncker, none of whom make the difference. The real re-foundation of the team will take place next summer.
Roma
The arrival of Baldanzi, at 10 million plus 5 million bonus at Empoli, was a surprise for a team struggling with UEFA’s financial fair play. Huijsen is the reinforcement for the defense and it seems that De Rossi already likes him a lot. Outgoing via Kumbulla, who will try to find himself at Sassuolo, and Belotti.
The farewell to Vina earned 8 million from Flamengo.
Salernitana
A tourbillon, as the returning sporting director Sabbatini had guaranteed. Many more or less well-known names, including Lovato, Jovane Cabral, Botheim and Danilouc (are you sure it wasn’t needed?), now it’s up to Pippo Inzaghi to include the new ones, and he has already done so with Zanoli and Basic. Defender Pellegrino can find himself in Salerno and find a place in the Albiceleste.
Sassuolo
Dionisi had asked not to cause any upheavals, and so it was, the coach lost only one starter, namely Vina. Alvarez is also gone, finishing in Serie B at Sampdoria. Inside Kumbulla and Doig, the latter at the coach’s request.
Torino
The arrivals of Lovato, Okerek and Masina served to calm a place that was already ‘uproaring’ against President Cairo. The transfers of Demba Seck and Soppy were a given. Juric will take care of the rest.
Udinese
Samardzic remained (he will leave in the summer), the Argentine Giannetti arrived from Velez, and the only real other movement was the loan of the misunderstood talent Pafundi to Lausanne.
Verona
A real supermarket with lots of sales, to the point that it is impossible to list them all: the team of barons has been dismembered. The fans’ anger towards president Setti is justified, unless the (not many) new arrivals, such as Vinagre, Noslin and Dani Silva drag the yellow-blue team to unexpected results. But saving oneself in these conditions appears to be a very complicated task.
